OK so this is a question for somebody (me) that has limited funds, already has an am3+ motherboard(M5A-MLX V2) and is builiding a low cost and spec computer for gaming for the first time.
All I really want to know is, is the 965BE that old I would see much better perfomance with the FX6300. Also I do have a real concern that I might not have the bios to support the FX, and might not even get a post so I could flash the bios to accept the piledriver on that motherboard.
The motherboard is rev 3.01, but as I have never built my own computer before that doesn't really mean anything to me, and paying for a new motherboard or even a stand in processor like a sempron just to get it to post is out of the question.
So funds are a real issue and will it not only cost me more for the FX but also cost me in other ways, or is it not worth the hassle and just get the 965BE which will work on the MB out of the box?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Honestly if it's just for gaming Phenom 2's are still a fine choice. They overclock like champs and have always been a personal favorite of mine. I have a 760g mobo that works fine with my FX4100 though you may need to update the bios for stability and such, I had some issues with that before. It really depends on the cost. If you can afford a 6300 it's a great choice. But, down to the real issue. I can't say if the mobo will post with it out of the box but worst case scenario you could return it.
Thanks for that, I Think I will go with the 965 because its £30 cheaper than the 6300 on amazon uk.
£30 might not sound a lot, but that will be £30 towards a better card and it means the difference between a 7770 (with the fx) and a 7850 ghz with the Phenom.
Go for 6300 it's way faster than you think it is-- Yes, it is pretty fast, and I cannot argue with the price of this CPU. 6 cores, and also, Trinity based Cpu , it IS faster than the phenoms. Phenom's architecture is old, go for 6300 and you should see very good performance.. if you want performance go for 6300
