I'm considering getting a gtx 980, but I'm not sure if its enough of an upgrade over my 680 (not sure if it matters but I have the TOP edition. Note: never buy a triple slot card) to be worth it... alternatively I could just wait a bit, build a htpc, throw the 680 in that, and grab a 970... either way the soonest anything would happen is in a month, as I have to buy snow tires... or die this winter.
1. Upgrade.
2. A 680 in a HTPC is beyond silly. Sell it on eBay, you can still get a couple hundred for it these days.
Well it will be significantly faster than the 680. That being said if you are okay with the performance of your games right now I don't see much of a reason to upgrade.
The 980 is 780 Ti levels of power. Really for people who game at 1440p, I think you'll be fine with the 970.
Also who knows how the prices will be once they aren't so new and once we see what AMD is going to do.
There is nothing wrong with having a ridiculously powerful htpc :D
I thought nvidia had good sli scaling, is there a reason why you dont consider sli-ing the bugger?
I am guessing space constraint reasons?
It's a triple slot card so sli-ing it isn't an option
Wow. I did not know it was THAT much better... jeeze. alright, time to wait a little bit and get a beast of a card.
Just wait till the next process node, we will have high bandwidth memory around the same time. 6 months. Your 680 will be just fine. The Maxwell chips are great from an architectural standpoint, but suffer from the lack of innovation of surrounding technologies.
if you're at 1080p I don't see the gain.... if you're at 1440p... THEN it starts to make some sense
I'm at 1200p
I have a 1920x1200 monitor
are you in a micro atx case, then why cant you sli.
Sell the 680 for half decent money while you can and grab a 970 then oc to 980 performance (if you need to).
Yeah you could wait for further gen's but it wont be long before 6 series cards are worth a pittance. I upgrade every 2 generations for this very fact.
You should get at least $150 for the 680, then just spend another $200 or so on the ($350) gtx970 upgrade.
970 is able to get 50 fps tops on a few games at 1440, its realistically only a 1080p card unless you buy 2 and put them in sli.
