3970x RMA - AMD Upgraded me to 5975wx - Need help/Sanity Check

Hi Everyone!

I’m new here and as the title suggest I’m in need of some help/sanity check.

I had a 3970x workstation I built for my work (3D modeling/sculpting/rendering) until about 2 weeks ago when the CPU started becoming unstable. I was getting WHEA Logger Event 19 multiple times per second. After going through my own troubleshoots and then following AMD’s Customer Support troubleshoots I RMA the processor (2 months left on Warranty, really lucked out).

AMD informed me that they no longer have 3970x and they upgraded me to the 5975wx, which is cool and all but now I’m forced to build a new-ish PC when that was never in my plans.

So I’ve been pretty scattered brain lately trying to research what I could about WRX80 Motherboards and RAM while trying to maintain my day job on my slower/older backup PC. This forum is the only place I could find that has a good amount of people with experience on the WRX80 platform.

I plan to get the Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI II
I have no need for overclocking, the defaults give me all the power I need.
I plan to reuse my Noctua Cooler, 3090, and Corsair HX1200 PSU(maybe?).

For the questions I have (to confirm if I got things right)

PSU:
I want to reuse my PSU (if possible) but I understand the the Mobo has some extra power connectors for the PCIe. After checking the manual I don’t think I have the cables for it. Do I need a new PSU or extra cables? If so, any recommendations?

RAM:
I don’t think I need RDIMM for my work and ECC is not that important to me since 3D application crashes for many reasons and my workflow already takes that into account. I should be fine with UDIMM as long as it’s in the supported list, right?

I was thinking about getting four T-Create Classic 10L DDR4 64GB Kit 3200MHz CL22 (TTCCD464G3200HC22DC01) that I found through a build video.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I do game on my workstation and livestream some 3D Art which is why I’m leaning towards UDIMM but from my understanding latency with ECC is pretty unnoticeable. I just have no experience with ECC RAM.

Those are the two things on my mind about this and I need my workstation back in working order ASAP. After spending a late night reading through all relevant ThreadRipper Pro threads on this forum, I trust you fine people for a sanity check.

Thank you in advance!

Taking some time to look over the Manual of the Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI II and comparing it to the one extra PCIe cable I have.

Would this work?

It looks like the correct fitting, personally I don’t like that the two connectors share the same main cable but I am trying to avoid having to buy another PSU. All my parts are just shy under 3 years of use.

Yes, that’s the right cable, and it’s absolutely fine to use one cable with two connectors. If you were fully-populating all seven expansion slots with power-hungry cards, it might be worth considering using two different cables.

As far as RAM goes, why not re-use what you already have from the old platform?

Nice, thank you!
I was worried I’d have to buy a new PSU, I’m glad I can reuse it.

As for the RAM, I’m sure they’re fine. I even ran MemTest when I was troubleshooting but I can’t shake the (unreasonable) iffy feeling. Other than that I don’t think it’s supported.

I have 16GB sticks of G.Skill Trident but the support page only show compatibility for either 8 or 32 GB sticks.

When I pull up the memory QVL for that board the first kit I see is 2x16GB. Where are you looking?

Memtest is a little passé. I would recommend something from this list. You could always start with your existing kit, do a bunch of testing, and replace it if necessary.

Thanks for memory test link, I’m gonna bookmark that just in case I need it.

I forgot to mention the sticks are 3200mhz probably why I didn’t see it when I filtered the list.

Since I’m in this situation, I figured I’d take this chance and upgrade the RAM since it was already on my mind prior to all this.

I really appreciate your help and quick response, thank you!
