༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ most important browser plugin: a JavaScript blocker (uBlock Orign tutorial)

Oh hi,

you didn’t see me there. You know why? I am using uBlock Orign.

Since most phishing and hacks occur by abusing JavaScript, many security specialists count on the NoScript addon. This is very effective but there is no balance to usability since its a hassle every day (which is why the Tails OS also uses the following).

So — instead — try and meet uBlock Orign. Its a fire and forget plugin with predefined rulesets by topic you can add:

If you want to override this global rule settings click the addon icon while surfing and a matrix will appear. The left column is for global settings, the right for this specific page. There will be all scripts listed a page wants to use:

Light color is the presets, dark your personal overrides. If you mark the script green, it will be allowed, red forbidden. If you mark it on the left column it will be allowed on the entire web (coin-hive anyone? ;-).

But as i said it’s basically fire and forget, just install, subscribe to the rulesets you want, and you’re done. It has way more features like blocking certain elements on a page. If you want to step it up more complex, try the uMatrix addon.

Always keep in mind, if you install a plugin you are giving away trust. And as we know, trust is a weakness. Something isn’t perfect when you can’t add anymore things, it’s perfect when you can’t leave anything.

So, what is your most important browser plugin?

NoScript

NoScript + ublock origin
…is this overkill?

Yes it is. I added “instead”, thank you.

I also had NoScript but I discovered I explore too much. Statistic for the past week:

Data Gathered Since
Oct 01 2017
You Have Visited
365 Sites
You Have Connected With
695 Third Party Sites

It was a pain everyday to unblock scripts and pages, even after 1 month. So I decided to pick a easier alternative.

Click all the things. Confuse googles targeting algorithms…

Yeah, it is what it is. I use Firefox with Tampermonkey/Greasemonkey, Noscript, etc but I keep chrome fairly bare except dev tools, Wappalyzer, etc because I use Gsuite Enterprise at work. I use other browsers too, but Firefox is my go to for anything risque.

Ok, that’s more than consumer browsing
uMatrix is also interesting, it blocks parts of scripts and shows an element count.

AdNauseam is great, but it seriously chokes under heavy load. My computer would eat it with 500 tabs.

I’ve been using unlock origin and abp… Excited to test out noscript.

Clickclickclick.click is a good website to see what kind of spying is being performed on us!

Quick question if you guys know;

Why do the L1 hosts show browsers with ads during the show?

Is it a sort of “follow our example” sort of thing or a legal thing? Some of the ads have audio interrupted the show as well.

Respect for other content creators

So if they used ad blockers, then it would just be a matter of disrespect, and not a legal issue?

It would be hard for them to ask us to watch ads on the videos to support them and then block the ads themselves.

That said I wish they did. Ads and scripts loading for all sorts of 3rd parties cause havoc and slow everything down. They complain about it a few time but them bite their own tongues and carry on.

Yes, I can agree with that statement. Sometimes I think this breaches the subject of “don’t download our music (but buy all our merch if you do)” territory. It’s interesting. I block ads when interacting with L1, but I rock the teeshirts, mugs, and so on.

I think one dollar on patreon is plenty more than all the ad-viewing a person could do in a month.

Speaking about scripts and ads, patreon.com must be one of the worst sites, scripts galore. With ScriptSafe and uBlock I get pretty much a blank page in Chromium. Also, they lost their db with all the emails a while ago, resulting in a constant stream of spam to the email I gave them. Fuck-ups.

NoScript is an old friend in FireFox. Without it, everything grinds to a halt. uBlock and uMatrix are also good, If I had to choose one plugin/extension for a browser that would be it. uBlock is great.
