(I am just listing questions of the top of my head, i know it doesn't sound coherent)
First i ill start off, i have ran windows or mac for the majority of my life(i'm 14...so ya) anyway, i have decided to switch to linux. I have dabbled in Mint and Ubuntu, those just felt bloated. I have decided between Zorin 8 or Manjaro. I know Zorin is ubuntu based and Manjaro is Arch based. Would i be losing out on some support if i go with manjaro? I would be doing gaming and general tasks. I do like on Zorin comes with a lot of Apps i would need.
I also dont care about rolling releases. I have dual moniters and a ssd and a hdd, which has better support out of box. I heard some people say that Zorin is just made to look like windows. Is that bad.
I use manjaro, I think its great. Takes a little tinkering but it does everything I need, also really lightweight. Great community too. Compared to my friends running ubuntu or distros based around ubuntu I've had less problems and quicker, easier fixes when I do. Just my 2 cents.
If you just want a generic Linux distro that is laid out in a way that is familiar to you, then choose Zorin. I've installed Zorin on a couple different people's computers and they seem to like it a lot. I do however think that Elementary OS is the the easiest Linux distro to figure out for a new user. There is a dock and an applications button. It doesn't get much simpler than that in my opinion.
Manjaro, Its a superb distro, KDE is easily installed and arch is much more powerful than deb in ways, Yaourt is easier than deb tools to compile, all drivers for you GPU should be there on install, steam is pre-installed.
Also Arch is one of the best documented distros around, others are good, but the time, effort and detail in these guides is superb, you will learn with arch.
If you want a system that is not bloated, you can use Archbang or Arch base, this requires some knowledge but again is well written, Archbang is a bit weird, sometimes it installs others it does not, so just try to catch it on a good day :)
I had issues with Elementary OS, such as programs not loading, graphical glitches, etc. I didn't bother to tinker with it too much but I have to admit, it looks damned gorgeous. I'm sure it will be fantastic once they get all the issues sorted out though.
Different hardware, different issues I guess. My laptop isn't the friendliest to Linux. Heck, I can't even use GPT on it, even though it 'supports' it. I have to use MBR, otherwise the poweroff and reboot commands don't work.
Yeah, but some distros come with more bloatware than others, making them perform slower on older systems. That's why I love Arch, install what you please. Considering Gentoo, but that looks to be a pain in the ass.
Some do but they also offer dual arch or minimal distros, with Mageia I always use Dual arch, Manjaro I use minimal and so on, ah the chase of super lightweight systems, will it ever end?
