ZFS array in USB HDD enclosure getting suspended after IO failures

Hey all! I’ve just been a lurker for a while but now I’ve finally got something to post about:

I recently got an Orico USB 3.5" enclosure set up as a raidz1 array with 4 fresh (or as fresh as fac refurb gets) 22tb Exos disks which has been a nice little bump in capacity over my tiny nvme box. However, a few days ago I ran into a minor issue where attempting to access it would cause any process to hang into (seemingly) infinity, since the ZFS array had been suspended due to IO errors. At the time I just made the very half-arsed assumption that I needed to remount the zpool with UUIDs thinking drive labels got mixed up or something.

Come to find out an hour or so ago, that definitely wasn’t the problem. I learned this the hard way after spending longer than I’d like to admit debugging my wip Nexcloud stack thinking I was just really screwing up my dockerfile for having to go in and kill the dysfunctional container processes manually.

I saw a random thread somewhere about how a certain kernel update caused what seemed to be the same issue for someone’s USB drive, but that was all I really found. I would just try downgrading kernels, but I’m not home at the moment and the last time it happened there were a bunch of aforementioned stalled processes that prevented system shutdown, so not particularly keen on messing with that remotely until I know more.

In essence: Are there any known related issues with the below versions and/or potential workarounds?

I’m currently running Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS with kernel version 6.8.0-55-generic

zfs version:
zfs-2.2.2-0ubuntu9.1 zfs-kmod-2.2.2-0ubuntu9.1

Model of drive enclosure:

pool: zenpool
state: SUSPENDED
status: One or more devices are faulted in response to IO failures.
action: Make sure the affected devices are connected, then run 'zpool clear'.
