im doing a new build, the asus site says it can only support up to 1866 mhz, while they list some 2133 units as compatable. can the sabertooth support and utilize faster memory?
The Sabertooth will not support memory past 1866mHz. If you do have any memory faster than that installed, you will have to downclock it to the appropriate frequency (1866, naturally - go as fast as you can for that board.) You don't really need any faster memory than 1866 for practical applications; there will be a performance boost, unlike some people will have you believe, but 1866 will be fine. Most likely, it as a typo on Asus's part.
Brennanriddell is wrong, the Z77 Sabertooth will support faster RAM. Qualified Vendors List shows support up to 2400mhz RAM. G.Skill website shows support up to their 2600mhz RAM modules.
I have the Z77 Sabertooth and 16gb of Corsair Dominator Platinum C9 2133mhz RAM, with a slight overclock to 2200mhz, and i7 3770k @ 4.6ghz.
I really hate misinformation, so take it from me, I am running this damn thing with 2200mhz RAM, and I can probably overclock it more but my system is rock stable so I see no reason to keep going for overkill.
I have a Z77 Sabertooth and can confirm higher speeds than 1866mhz are supported, i run 1866mhz but have it clocked at 2000mhz
thanks guys! i was going to get a p8z77 deluxe, but it had all of those wifi features i could care less about and it didnt have tuf compenents and a 5 year warrenty
Just make sure you get the latest Bios on the Z77 Sabertooth. It should be the first major update you do. The default Bios is HORRIBLE (I couldn't get a fucking 4.2ghz stable overclock with it, it's just bad, don't use it).
