Your Old PC Is Your Exit Plan: ft. GamersNexus - Question

Hey @wendell, have you shared your Home Assistant thermostat setup somewhere? Can you?

This and I have some passive current monitors in the panel. From here tou can script whatever you like in ha and log it to a dashboard

I always try to push people towards using whatever gear they have for a slightly different reason - you need a bit of time to figure out what you want & need. So the longer you can delay your first homelab purchase the better.

e.g. Some people want 50TB of spinning rust for media. I wanted ~4TB that is mixed SSD/optane for lightening fast LXC. Those are completely different hardware buys.

If you’re still at the “just discovered docker” stage of the journey then you don’t know which of those is you so it’s not the moment to drop big money

Most modern day pc’s are pretty powerful and can pretty much do whatever you need. I’m still using Ryzen 3000 series pc’s without even thinking twice about needing to upgrade. I’m glad I got my NAS, router, and other stuff before they decided to push end users off the cliff.

Go Control GC-TBZ48 or Honeywell T6 z-wave?

They’re saying it converts the T6 to a dumb device, but just the scheduling, right? It still follows the compressor logic rules (wait 5 minutes before cycling back on, switch to emergency heat at X temp, etc).

Just installed the T6 Pro Z-Wave and I run Home Assistant. T6 has all the safety rules baked in so the automations won’t cancel the compressor logic rules. I don’t know much about emergency heat since I haven’t had it through the winter. But I do recommend it. They are also cheap on ebay, mine was like $35.
