Your best films of 2014

What's your best films of 2014? Either those released or older films you watched this year... I'll kick it off...

Best of films released 2014 (no order):

  • Interstellar
  • Snowpiercer: must watch film, hollywood cannot make such a film
  • Nightcrawler
  • Fury: solid portrait of masculinity, dehumanisation of war and menacing german tanks

I haven't seen Boyhood, Calvary or Turner but want to. I though Lucy was good, but a bit compromised compared to the films above. Edge of Tomorrow was fun.

Older films I saw in 2014:

  • Enemy: It's a bit odd, but in a good way. will make you think
  • Out of the Furnace: Another very masculine film, also with an honest subtext of the human effects of industrial decline and dehumanisation of war. One the surface is a kick ass film about brotherhood and trying to do right

I've watched a few older film, some classics, that I've seen before. I need to watch some older films that I haven't seen... I have to watch Akira as well.

Thoughts? What were yours? Do you think any of the above suck? What do you want to see, but haven't yet?

I didn't make any films so I cannot answer this question.  :/

well played...

i meant, films you've seen (I've only made one highly pretentious short film this year, black and white, no talking but with sound effects, etc...)...

Oh, let me see...

The two Marvel movies were pretty decent action flicks.  I actually think Winter Soldier is my favorite Marvel movie to date.

Days of Future Past was decent, though, it may have just been my super low expectations considering how bad X1-3 were.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was surprisingly good.  Rise was decent, but Dawn was truly a good film, even with the somewhat cliche'd ending.

Godzilla was something of a let down, but still miles better than than the 98 effort.

22 Jump Street was a decent comedy.  The self awareness of those movies really help them.

Same goes for Horrible Bosses 2.

Edge of Tomorrow was quite good as well.

Birdman was very good, and Michael Keaton was fantastic in it.

Snowpiercer was good, so long as you were willing to just roll with the premise lol.

Under the Skin was interesting, and felt like something different.

Jodorowsky's Dune was incredibly interesting.  Just seeing both what could have been, and the insane amount of influence a movie that never existed had on the film industry (and sci fi in general) is quite compelling.

Ummmmm.....   I haven't seen Interstellar yet.  Same goes for Nightcrawler, both of which I've heard were good.  I've also heard good things about Whiplash.  There's plenty of others that are supposed to be good that I haven't gotten around to as well, like Coherence, Inherent Vice, Gone Girl etc.  Anyway, that's all I got off the top of my head.

Guardians of the Galaxy: I thought it was pretty good, was funny as well.

Planet of the Apes: Was better than the first but was a bit long honestly, still a good watch though.

Godzilla: So far one of the best Godzilla movies, needed more actual monster though, too much character drama.

These are all in no particular order and there are a still a few movies I haven't seen yet.

Guardians of the Galaxy: I thought it was pretty good overall (regardless of whether or not you know stuff about the background story) with a decent amount of comedy (really curious to see how they end up connecting it back to the Avengers)

Edge of Tomorrow: it wasn't original but it was good nonetheless

Big Hero 6: I saw this with my 13 year old brother and my 22 year old sister and all of us thoroughly enjoyed it but it is more enjoyable for someone with kids.

Interstellar: I JUST SAW THIS AND IF YOU HAVEN'T GET YOUR SELF TO A LOCAL THEATER RIGHT NOW. No but seriously in typical Christopher Nolan Fashion this is as good as Inception and The Dark Knight and the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is amazing as well. Highly recommend this to anyone.

It's been a decent year for films.

i want to watch Inherent Vice and Birdman.

Ok, Foxcatcher needs to be on my list. It creeps up on you, slowly at first, then blows you away. Watch it in cinema, not on your tiny 65 inch TV. It's cinematic.

Don't watch the trailer or google the subject/film.

i missed Under The Skin when it was in theatres, so i'll try to rent the blu-ray sometime soon.

Ok. Interstellar was excellent, Guardians of the Galaxy was very fun, Fury was pretty good, and I really enjoyed The Imitation Game today. There are plenty of films I haven't seen this year but I don't really keep up the movie industry.

Edit: And the Lego Movie :P

My tops this year (no order)

  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Lego Movie
  • Interstellar
  • HTTYD2
  • FURY
  • Fault in out Stars
  • Edge of Tomorrow
  • Xmen: Future past
  • Hobbit: Battle of five armies

For me it would be close between Godzilla and Guardians of the Galaxy. I've ben wanting to see Birdman and Interstellar but may "get it" later in the future.

You should.  It's interesting.  I wouldn't call it a GREAT film, but it is good, and different enough that it keeps you interested.  Plus, if you're a fan of Scarlett Johansson...  there's that lol.

Wait, the Lego Movie was this year?  D:

*edits post*

In no order, except for Interstellar. it is hands down my favorite film of the year. i saw it 3 times for cripes sake :P

1. Interstellar: The music alone is worth the trip. I was just thinking about the little pice payed as they fly by Saturn..... beautiful. I have seen it 3 times. once in 70mm IMAX.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy: Solid film. fave marvel movie.

3. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: Long, but definitely a feast for the eyes at 48fps 3D. i am a sucker for the Middle-Earth films.

4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier: I am not even a Cap fan, and hated the first film, but this was a blast. i went and bought a Cap shirt, AND the hardcover Winter Soldier comics it is based on.

5. Godzilla: Loved the take on it. hope the next one has more Godzilla.

6. John Wick: This is an action movie. the gunplay does away with the normal Hollywood style 'empty clips, hero doesn't get hit' and 'shoot a guy, he is dead instantly' stuff. John Wick goes for head shots. the BEST gun fights i have ever seen.

Snowpiercer is an OK flick not the greatest this year by any means it has more to do with the fact that the movie doesn't know what it wants to be. It tries to be something like an Asian made hollywood movie and at that it fails miserably. I wished they went full out asian on this. Good movie but could have been better without the identity crisis.

Godzilla A lot better than Emmerichs overgrown dinosaur, but why again only dark/rainy stuff or glimpses. Better yes but room for a lot of improvement.

Guardians of the Galaxy For me the surprise of the year didn't think it would turn out this good.

Interstellar best movie of the year simple.

Hobbit dunno didn't went to the cinema for it. Yes I love the middle earth films but I hate the cinema crowd that go see it.

as for the rest I haven't seen em yet

honorable mention and that is an understatement that is a short movie called Wanderers by Erik Wernquist with voice over of Carl Sagan. That is a short that for me beat even Interstellar and completely blew me away.

Movies I seen in the cinema last year:

  • Robocop
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Godzilla
  • X-Men Days of Future Past
  • Transformers: Age of Extinction
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • The Expendables 3
  • The Maze Runner
  • Dracula Untold
  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (twice)

If I have to make a top 3, I would go with 1. Godzilla 2. Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Interstellar by far is my favorite film of 2014 (hell, one of my all time favorites).

Some other mentions are Snowpiercer, Days of Future Past, Guardians of The Galaxy, and Big Hero 6.

If I were to say worst film I saw, it would probably be The Fault In Our Stars, although I know there is much worse than that film that came out this year, albeit I never saw them. (was Divergent a 2014 film? That was bad too IMO).
