Looking at upgrading my rig to a modular PSU to help with airflow in my case. Things I'm looking for:
EDIT: MUST be 80+ Gold or better!
1) Around $175 on newegg (Must be newegg for free shipping and stuff)
2) Around 750W (I'm wanting to go 2-way SLI with GTX 770 SC from EVGA, which pcpartpicker is estimating at 690W for power draw in my rig with a FX-8350, so 750 would give me some headroom for overclocking; I realize that, until I pick up a second card, that 750W is overkill for my rig)
3) MUST BE FULLY MODULAR; Dear god I can't live with my "semi-modular" anymore. Can't organize the cables worth a damn in my case.
4) Trying to stick to single 12V rail, but 2 might be ok if the current on them is good enough for the 770's (42A +)
5) If you can personally vouch for its performance, please let me know. If its actual users are happy with it, then I'll probably like it too. I'm not really inclined to believe major hardware reviews unless, of course, its Logan doing the review.
I know Corsair and Seasonic are favorites for many people, but are there other alternatives that people like too? I'm trying to get as broad a picture as I can in the parameters I have set before I start narrowing the field.
750W Supporting SLI all the way but not Crossfire and this one is 80+ Gold Certified
Modular to your hearts content!
Single 12V@62A
I have seen reviews on it from multiple sources and you can look on NewEgg youself and see all the positive feedback. I have a rebranded SeaSonic Model and it is great, the best parts around hands down with a good warranty.
Dude that PSU looks awesome. I might end up going with that and not even waiting for other posts. Holy crap. I wonder how I missed this when I was looking through newegg's PSUs. I can't believe I forgot to list 80 plus gold or better as a criterion, but its DEFINITELY important for my rig. Thanks!
No problem! I used PCPartPicker.com for help with narrowing down a good PSU. If you are able to find it(if it exists) a 800W+ version just to give yourself a little more head room, because volatge calculater are all different and can be off sometimes. But in any case, I was glad I could help!
pcpartpicker is the tits. I always use it for helping people design builds. One of these days I need to order through them to give them some business. I use their site all the time. lol
Also, I doubt I need too much head room. I probably won't overclock 2 GTX 770's too much, considering I'm gonna be sticking to air cooling for the forseeable future (GPU waterblocks are expensive!!!), and the EVGA SuperClocked cards are already ramped up quite a bit as it is. The one I gotta be careful of is my CPU. The FX chips draw a FUCKTON of power.
Yeah that's true, but if you want to keep the temps down on you graphics cards and keep them silent, I would recommend the Artic Cooling's Accelero series for graphics card. They are all air cooling coolers and on an overclocked 6870, from personal experience; on full load my temps never past 50 C and were on 38 C idle. The only draw back is that it turns a two slot card into a 3 slot one, and they are $60-$80 a piece but totally every penny. And I agree the CPU would probably something you will want to look out for but as long as you have a decent overclock on it, it will be alright.
If I'm dissatisfied with EVGA's ACX cooler (which came on my card), I'll have to check those out. Logan seemed to really like it (that is, the ACX cooler), so I may be able to skip an aftermarked cooler all together. I'll have to experiment and see where my temps go. As for the 6870, I had 2 from Asus in this rig when I originally built it. Talk about a solid card.
Damn that sucks dude. At least you're getting a better card in the trade though! What brand are you getting? I've always been partial to XFX and Asus for AMD cards, but I hear Gigabyte makes a nice one too. Buddy of mine DESPISED his old MSI. I don't remember which one specifically it was, but I do remember it had the TwinFrozr II cooler. Thing got unreasonably hot on stock clock (70 C+).
I got a VTX3D 6870 1GB, which VTX3D is somewhat more of a european brand I believe, but anyway it was just a normal reference card though the stock core clock was at 900MHZ which i could only get to a max of 1000MHZ. The memory clock, which I believe benefits gaming more was not locked and I got it up to 1100 by increasing the stock voltage maybe 50MHZ from normal. The new one I'm getting from the same store because I got their little extra warranty when I bought it which saved me because I had voided the regular warranty by switching the cooler. Once I had called the guys at the place I never mentioned I switched the cooler to the Accelero one because the warranty they gave me said no matter what if it breaks we will credit you for it and I switched it back to the reference one the night before I sent it back. =P(Don't tell no one....) It's a HIS 6950 IceQ X Turbo 2GB which just went on sale for the same amount they are giving me back for my graphics card. =D The chance!
Don't worry, your secret is safe with me. I know the struggle that occurs when you want to push the envelope on performance but don't want to completely screw yourself over under the fine print.
If I may still suggest a different PSU I would point you to this. I cannot really say anything about it from my personal experience (atm it is still on my shelf waiting for the last bits of money for my new build :D), but I did quite a bit of research into that PSU and the reviews vere really good, some even said that the efficiency was almost at the level of a platinum certified unit.
... I already ordered the other one. :-( This one looks fantastic though. I'll have to keep track of this one in case a friend asks for advice. Specs on it are sound, and sounds like its components are solid as well. What are you putting in the new build with it?
My build will not utilize so much wattage, I have pretty much bought that because I loved the looks of it and I am planning on doing a black/white build (full water loop with transparent tubes and a milk-like coolant). With a 5yr warranty and a 80+ Gold rating I dont really mind :D
FX 8350, Sapphire 7950, a bunch of leds, fans and as I mentioned a full water loop later on.
Sounds bangin'. I'm rocking an FX-8350 with an EVGA GTX 770 SC that will eventually have a twin with it in full x16/x16 SLI. The fans are all Blue LED, but my CPU cooler has red LED (I ordered the red version instead of the blue version by mistake, but I liked it and decided to keep it. lol I might build a rig with a custom loop someday, but in the meantime I'm still rocking air cooling that sounds like a jet engine. lol I'm probably going to pick up some of those Corsair AF-series fans to try to help with the noise, plus they're apparently really nice fans.
Make it a police-like build! :D Mayhaps get a red led strip for the case window. For the moment I ordered the Xigmatek Dark Knight Night Hawk ed, so it will be aircooled for quite some time.
But I am getting too exicited :D I am going to order all the parts next week or the week after. Yay :D
