Well guy just a few weeks ago i bought a XFX radeon 4870 and everything for the first two weeks.
But this past week i wanted to play bioshock 2 to stress test my computer as well as have fun. But i got a white screen and my computer rebooted. It seemed odd to me because this card is rather new(barely used) not only that but the tempeture of the card is 92 degrees witch in my oppinion is on the high end.
When im playing Bioshock its get's to 98c. this really scares me because i just bought this card and i dont have the money to buy different card.
lastly im led to beleave it a driver problem. but hey what do i know about any of this im new to this stuff.
I have a Asus 4870 (bought it last year for $50) and the same kind of overheating happened to me. I bought a replacement cooler and tied a case fan to it and plugged it directly into my power supply.
You should either open up your side panel and stick a big box fan next to it or just get a GTX 460. Right now, that card makes more sense to buy than a 4870 for budget gaming because it has DX11 and PhysX and it's slightly faster.
i replaced the paste today and it idles at 58c with the towwer fan infront of it and when im gaming with the tower infront it get around to 70-80c but without the tower fan. it still overheats
