XFCE is prepping for their next major release, with the first pre-release out today.
The majority of the work surrounds the move away from GTK2 to GTK3. Improved display handling, improved HiDPI support, and bug fixes and stability improvements in various other components.
XFCE 4.14 is currently planned for final release around August.
I’m kinda curious to see what their improvements will be.
XFCE is still one of my favourite DE’s,
but its lacking a bit behind to all the rest now days.
KDE is my favorite but I moved off of it to check out stock Ubuntu 19.04 / Gnome. I’ve been told XFCE does not handle 4k sell. How true is this? It’s the only reason I went with Ubuntu verse trying it.
“handle 4k well” will be addressed by the 4.14 release. That’s what the HiDPI support I mentioned is.
The lack of HiDPI support is why I haven’t given XFCE serious consideration for daily use. There are ugly hacks to enable it, but they’re ugly hacks.
This changes things. I’ll give it a serious evaluation once it is released, or hits Sid.
