X99 vs Z97

Currently i have a i5 4690k and want to upgrade to an i7. I have been looking at the 4790k for staying on the z97 platform. should i just upgrade to the X99 since i am buying a new cpu? Is the performance worth having to buy a new mobo and memory for? Is the new X99 that much better?

it kind of depends on what your work load is going to be. If your just gaming going from an i7 8 core to x99 i7 I'm assuming 12 core wont make a big difference. But if you are going to be doing a lot of rendering and 3d work or virtulization where those extra core could be utilized then it should make a difference.

If you're just gaming Moving from that i5 you're going to see little to ZERO difference. Maybe 5%, Hell you'd see more of an improvement from a fresh install of windows i'd imagine.

If you're just going for a higher performance chip for workloads like rendering or simulating get something with more cores. x99 will server you well in that regard.

What are you doing with this system? If it is just gaming you won't gain much from going to an i7, x99 or otherwise, since most games don't use more than 4 threads. If you are actually using programs that use 10+ threads you should probably wait for skylake-e.

I'm going to be gaming and streaming. Along with video editing. So big open world games eat up most of my i5 like gta 5 and leave nothing for streaming. So im pretty sure it's time for an i7 just unsure which one is better considering price.

You would probably be fine just bumping the cpu up to an i7 on the Z97 platform for you streaming needs. I don't think a lot of games use more than 4 cores even large open world games so you will still have another 4 cores at your disposal which should be more than enough for streaming.

Good to know. I have the same 4960K CPU and I am happy with it except when rendering CAD. It works fine but it heats up and takes a minute or two. I will probably get a cheaper 4790K before I go up to Haswell-E.

What do you mean it heats up you might just need a better cooler

My cooler is pretty good (Thermalright Macho Rev B.), it just spikes to over 70C really fast when doing ray tracing. I reduced my o/c from 4.5 to 4.4 and it stays under 70. I know my CPU could go hotter with ease, but I don't like to push it that much. I had an alarm set at 70 and it kind of scared me how quick it heated up. Nothing else I do heats it too much.

4790K would basicly allready be fine for your workloads.
Unless you are realy planning to do allot of video editing or productivity work on a daily base.
Then an upgrade to X99 with one of the 6 cores might make more sense.

But just gaming + streaming, and rendering a video so now and then.
The 4790K will be sufficient.

I picked up a i7 5820k and a x99 mobo for less than 500. I would go for x99 because there are more options, and more headroom for streaming and video editing

Shoot my 860k Is a boss. Games like a boss, Remote desktops like a boss, Renders like a boss if you have a few hours to spare.
