X99 MOBO Compatible with Linux & VT-D?

Hello all,

Was hoping I might get specific answers here. I am looking for an X99 MOBO (preferable mostly black or black and white) that has (2) Intel NIC hookups, will work with VT-D znd Linux, and has great support for an M.2 SSD without bogging down the lanes for the GPU's?

I will be running an i7 5930K and will need to have (2) GPU's running, not in crossfire, for the Linux/Windows setup I am wanting/needing to get going.

Thanks

There is only 2 motherboards that i can think of, which would fit in your wishes.
But they are not cheap!

Asus X99 Deluxe
Asus X99-E WS

They are black or black + White, have dual intel nic´s, Ultra M.2.
And will work with Linux.

Of course there also other options, but most of them have a slight shade of other colors on it.

+1 on X99-E WS

Great board!

Yeah the WS is basicly the créme de lacréme of Asus X99 boards.
pretty sure it will work well with pci-e pass through.

Asrock X99 WS-E will also work, but yeah that board is black + blue

Yes it works with hardware passthrough, at least in kvm and Xen. I have three systems running them on SuSE with no problems at all. Two of these systems use hardware passthrough on a PCIe slot (not a GPU, but it should be the same for GPU's).

Yes basicly there are 4 motherboards that i know which will support hardware passthrough for sure.
And also have dual intel nic´s, and ultra m.2

  • Asus X99-E WS
  • Asrock X99 WS-E /10G
  • Asrock X99 WS-E
  • Asrock X99 WS

So i would recommend to pick one of these. ☺

I'd concur with one of the WS boards.

Really, really wanted to VGA passthrough myself - managed to buy the last non enthusiast K CPU with no Vt-d :c

Wow thank you so much guys for the feedback, this was of great help to me. Much appreciated.

@Zoltan, I am confused because in older posts relating to this matter you have stated to avoid the Asus MOBO's? Did something change with the 2011-3 boards?

2011-3 is not consumer class, not Z-chipset but X chipset. To my knowledge, X or C chipset worlkstation boards never had problems with VT-d.

Ah thanks for the clarification much appreciated. That ASUS X99-E WS is a looker but not cheap lol........

Be a little wary of the X99 Asus boards of you plan to use Vt-D. On the AMD side Asus is known to mess with some things required for it to work properly. Not sure if they do with Intel boards as well just a thought to put out there. Personally them messing with the extensions on purpose (even if only on AMD boards) is enough reason for me to never buy their boards

If color theme was not an issue, then i would go with the Asrock X99 WS.
Its currently on sale at newegg for arround $254,- after MiR,
@Logan uses this particular board in his rig.
It does feuture dual intel nic´s, and ultra m.2

I dont think you can find and other board that is workstation class in this price category.
Its realy good value for money i guess.

Coincidentally that's the MOBO I was looking at today. We will see what happens.
