Worth while to swap Z97 mobo for C chipset motherboard [Xeon E3-1241v3]

Hi, so right now I have a server aka gaming PC thats been re-purposed and upgraded.

I'm currently looking to get a couple 3/4TB drives for my storage needs but I have a Z97-A motherboard with 32gb of ram.
I have been reading and hear allot about ZFS and was thinking it would be a good choice, but I also know it assume theirs no errors in memory (so you would want ECC ram).

My question is it worth getting a C chipset motherboard and some ECC ram (would be $300 CAD) and going full server, or should just use my Z97-A motherboard.

Unless this server is hosting a production system that your income relies upon I wouldn't bother. Just make sure that any essential data is frequently backed up. RAID or filesystems that replace RAID (Btrfs/ZFS/ReFS) do not mean backups are redundant.

Modern RAM chips are much less prone to errors than those of the past, errors occur less frequently due to better materials and manufacturing processes. Therefore IMO you are taking a small risk which is fine for a personal file-server or labs setup.

Thanks for the response.

just curious for back up purposes, I was planning on taking all my old drives and using them for back ups, and have 3x3TB drives in raid in my server then 1 3tb in my main machine (I'm running low on storage, plex problems)

for my old drives, I have 2x1tbs (think one is dying, has a click when its spinning), a 2tb and 3tb.

Only if you realy need ecc.
If you dont need ecc then it wont be worth it.
