Worth getting scratched monitor for cheap?

Hello there.

I'm in dilemma. There is a monitor to be picked up for about $30. It's a reasonable, not that old Dell E2311Hf FHD 75Hz.
The thing is I wanted to try LCD as I'm still rockin on an old 17" CRT (1152x864 @75Hz). Wonder if i would see the difference in hold vs strobe scan display.
From my research i think i would need at least 120Hz panel to not see any ghosting etc. I've told myself when I upgrade, it would be only to something like PG278Q / Freesync equivalent, but can't spend that much on a monitor yet.

Clarified I'm willing to take the shot (hey - everyone has their problems huh? :D) there is one big drawback.

The monitor I've found is (how to say) "a bit scratched" -pics below. The top polarizer seems to be quite deeply scratched yet I can't make a clear judgement from these photos. Item description says it's not that bad.

My question is this. Is it worth the hassle. Do any of you guys had an experience with something like this? Is it manageable? Vaseline fix?

for $30 I think it's worth it to get away from that CRT.

It's severely scratched and you will notice it. Chronos's link on how to fix it, might work

Why do you want to ditch your CRT? I hear they're the bomb.

Jokes aside I concur with what NJM said, that's no light scuff. For $30 though, and with the options Chronos linked, it'd probably be worth the risk.

Almost made my mind. The auction ends in ~2 days. No bidders. Nobody wants to take the challenge. I could possibly get some automotive grade polish stuff and try it's magic. I'd feel like a baws if i manage to make it happen.

Cheers!

It'll be cheaper to get this and try to fix it or just live with it than to buy a new monitor.

The reason the seller shows a white webpage is the scratch is not as visible against white, To ask for an image with a game you play would have helped the decision but too late for that now?

not if you're gona be looking at it. no

That's not black, That's OFF. ;)

Thats a nasty scratch in a shit of a spot. If you could find another donor monitor for parts then swap out the panel it may be worth it ~ they're pretty good monitors. Try the vas or alcohol method as mentioned, even toothpaste - ive never had much luck with it though for deeper stuff.
Otherwise spend a bit more and buy a non-scratched one.

My college has similar monitors to that one in the labs, they're nice enough that I wouldn't think twice about paying $30 for one, especially if I was looking for another monitor (I'd have to say $50 would be the max I would pay).

Also, even if you decide to get a new monitor with all or some of the fancy new things (1440p, 144hz, free/g-sync, 21:9, whatever hits your fancy) after getting this one at some point, it won't have to just collect dust, just go ahead and use it as a secondary monitor.

The auction ended 4 hours ago. In the last minute 6 people made their bids, the winner probably with bid sniper (i use it alot). It went for ~$50. Haha. not worth it IMO. for $30 yeah why not - $50 though, meh - i'll pass.

Now I'm looking at "damaged / not working" category, where I've found iiyama ProLite E2208HDS. Mid 2009, 22 FHD@75Hz and DVI. CCFL though - wanted LED. Backlight not working. Probably inverter caps, HV transformer or cold joint on the tubes themselves. Easy fix. Unfortunately I'm not the only one who knows how to repair such thing as the auction is heating up (day left, 4 bids, $12 the highest). Will end probably around ~$40/$50. Will see though.

Isn't it a bit too old model would you say?

Thank you all for your advice.
