Hi,

It is time to build a new stationary pc after many years of being more or less a laptop only user for seven years. I’ve not kept up with hardware developments at all.
My goal is to create a workstation light machine that will let me build containers, run VMs and code. I would like to play some games as well, examples being baldurs gate 3 and all games from paradox. The machine will be used both as part of my day to day job as well as hobby usage. I very much prefer the parts to have good linux support over minor performance gains. Also rgb is the work of the devil, so ideally kept to a minimum.

I have selected the following parts (could not post a link)
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 4.5 GHz 16-Core Processor
Asus proart LC 420
Asus proart x670E motherboard
corsair vengeance 64GB 6000 ddr5 CL30 ram
xfx speedster merc black edition rx 7900 xtx gfx card
proart case
corsair RM1000x 80+ gold modular psu

and my budget is flexible to a point, i could not justify the expense of a threadripper or a 4090 gfx, Living in Norway makes parts a bit more expensive than the reference prices suggest on pc part picker and the selection is a tad more limited.

Looks pretty good. I have this board on Linux and have no issues. In a couple weeks the zen 5 cpus launch, you might want to hold out for the 9950x.

also have this board, no issues and doesn’t look like gamer garbage

if you don’t game at all I wouldn’t bother with the dgpu nvm I should learn to read

If you are going with linux and want to game, might want to pick up a low end gpu for your desktop and vfio pass through the 7900 xtx into a windows virtual machine.

The iGPU works just fine for that, no need to get another one that eats PCIe lanes…

Whats an iGPU? just kidding, its been so long since Ive seen a cpu with integrated graphics it actually slipped my mind that was a thing. You are right.
