Wooden Keyboard

unbox therapy got a wooden key board

it looks so nice, i was thinking years ago about building wooden monitors, id love for technology to have the classic looks and feel of nice furniture. i just wish i was good at woodwork. what do you guys think? i just wanted to share because it looks pretty cool.

thats pretty cool. it would be even better if it was buckling spring.

i know right, i would love to see some real nice wooden PC cases too

maybe not wooden case. but mice would be cool.

yeah a mouse would be cool, i like the way the material would change from use over time. also i suppose with a case you might risk the wood bowing from heat

fire is a concern.

A lot of folks make custom wooden cases. Its not really an issue as far as I know as long as thermals are kept in check.

plus i suppose wood can be treated to stop it bowing in heat. i like that every bodies case would be unique because of the grain in the wood.

  1. Buy 3D precision milling machine
  2. Buy planks of very hard wood with tiny grain. (Briar, Cherry, Ebony)
  3. Mill key caps all day long
  4. Profit

I'd love a system made of real oak and maybe some leather parts. That would be pretty sweet. The mouse wheel for example could have real leather around it.

I believe Hama has made bamboo keyboard and mouse, if you're interested. I'd personally have my plastic keyboard and mouse.

That is really cool keyboard I'd love a spring loaded one, makes me think 'how long will PC equipment made out of wood last'?

They're a bit out there for my taste but very cool, id love the skills to create something like that.

Neither are my taste, but you have to admire the craftsmanship. The Stagecoach has amazing accurate detail. Everything is carved from wood just like a real stagecoach. Even the bits that look like metal.

The Ragnar Viking ship is off the hook. The helmet, side panels and other parts are animated. I like the sail (as duct) over the CPU cooler and little screen inside the case. The coolest thing is the mechanism of the moving parts. There are motors move tiny chains that run through pulleys on the deck of the ship. The amazing part is one can ignore the motors and crank the wheels on deck just as a Viking would to pull the chains.

a wooden keyboard is not a problem, the problem is in keyCAPS remember, for cherry MX switches, and similar, they require the plastic to flex a bit. This is a problem for wood.
Also, it is not uncommon for current wooden boards to suffer from key lock up due to grinding against other keys.
Many wooden boards get around this by using a wood laminate on top of keycaps, but many people say they still do not have that "bulky" feel that was sought. all-wood boards CAN be built, but again, the problem comes in mass production. until that is straightened out, it is just prohibitively too expensive.
