Wireless Router recommendation

My family is looking to get a new router. We currently are using one given by are ISP (it’s a virgin media super hub VMDG480 (its made by netgear))
I have been looking to get a new one as the speed is bad and the connection drops. Also we have a number of devices spread about the house and the signal isn’t very strong for them.
We have four phones connected , three pc’s as well as two televisions. We have other devices but they are used not on as frequently ( tablets and internet radio) .

We seriously need a upgrade as I’m planning too start gaming more seriously in the and don’t want to have to resort to buying a power line adapter to get a good connection.

The budget is around £70.But I’ll consider recommendations that cost more or less. I have already been looking at: Asus RT-N66U and Asus RT-N56U

Also I have just seen that the ISP has a new router we can get, specs: Full DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem functionality (also fully compatible with DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1, 2.0)
Eight bonded downstreams
Four bonded upstreams
Four ethernet 10/100/1000BaseT ports
Wireless b, g, n capable in 2.4GHz band plus wireless a, n & ac in 5GHz band (Dual-concurrent frequencies)
Five internal antennas
Up to three spatial streams in the 5GHz band
Supports WEP/WPA/WPA2 wireless security encryption
Supports WPS push button synchronisation
Built-in router, DHCP and firewall which can be customised and deactivated
Virgin Media customised housing
External power supply (12v 1.5A)
Dimensions: 215 x 70 x 195mm (8.5 x 2.75 x 7.5in)

Is it still worth buying one or should I just take the router upgrade from the ISP

Many thanks for your help.

The ASUS routers are fantastic. Out of the box they seem to be able to do about anything, and if not, they have huge support for custom firmwares such as DD-WRT or OpenWRT.

I used to have an RT-N66U but they seem to be somewhat know for flawed thermal design which I experienced myself after it died on me. Fortunately Asus's RMA process is fantastic but that's why for a while ASUS then went with the upright design. I'm currently however rocking an RT-AC68P which is just as awesome as well as Asus-Merlin which is a custom firmware based on stock but that adds some extra functionality and core features.

I would highly recommend them.
