I have a room on a high floor of my house and need something to extend the wifi signal up here, I have seen Wifi Extenders and it seems like you have to get it inbetween the two floors and they are quite bad for speeds. I have a ethernet cable coming to my room followed by a switch for my Xbox, PC and Laptop with a spare slot for something else.
I was wondering if a device existed that could make a WiFi hotspot on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz with the same name as the rest of my network that just comes off of an ethernet cable - Does anyone know if this exists, is possible and if so, what would be a good one?
replace the switch with a router. got your spot. some routers will actually come with the option to be a hotspot for another router.
Sounds like a good idea, I just have a few questions though. So, I was actually looking to get a replacement router soon anyway because of the issues with my wireless range, but if I keep my current router then just replace the switch with this router as you advised it should work? Would I have to out my router downstairs into modem mode or should it work anyway?
The switch is getting ethernet from the router you currently have right? yes then it should act just like the switch but also provide wifi. That one looks fine it's a router I'm not a huge networking person.
You do not need to replace the switch with a router. Use one of the spare connectors on the switch to hook a wifi access point into. Replacing te switch would require additional configuration as to prevent an IP clash.
Most wifi range extenders have the option to run either repeating a wifi signal or acting as an acces point hooking in to the existing wired network.
