Windows pc fans and lights remain on after shutdown

Hello all

Have searched and tried updating windows power settings, changing some bios led settings, currently have original settings on bios. The issue is when I shutdown pc, fans on case, cooler, and yup stay on, and one led on case fan stays on. I power pc off by pressing power button for about 5 seconds and it shuts down. No errors when I turn it on, and pc powers up normal and I do my work with no issues. Current power options and balanced power plan. Power and sleep button settings are: when I press power button: shut down; when I press the sleep button: sleep. It doesn’t do either. Shutdown settings: sleep and lock checked, those are the only two available. Turn off display and put computer to sleep: 15 minutes. PCI express link state power management off. Updated graphics driver, it was ok. In device manager: checked that drivers were up to date.

What I did was the following: had older hardware, updated sad from 1 tb to 2 tb by cloning it in macrium, moved partition with gparted to expand to the bigger size. The system worked as before with no issues. I’ve had it for about 10 years.

Updated hardware, mb, memory, cpu, cooler, and power supply. Everything is fine except the power off issue.

Would appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks

UEFI might have settings in relation to what happens when you press the power button. Inside of windows itself may also have the same thing. I would also look and make sure the front panel connections are correct. Refer to mb owners manual. Check sleep /hibernate settings. Check power state settings . I would guess you are just hibernating it instead of fully powering it down. Might have to clean install. A lot has changed including the code that controls such things.

The was good advice about troubleshooting, but i’ve already spent a good amount of that. So i did the thing you recommended and i was trying to avoid. A clean install of windows. I’ve had my os since 2000 version of windows upgrading until now, so i was due. So i did. one thing i have to say about that is: it was not that hard, except i called user support because i couldn’t get the license to load after i signed in to my windows account. I even saw there was a valid license in the windows account with all my current hardware. 2 techs later, i had to select “install on new hardware” option. Even though my current hardware was listed on the license. BTW the two other options were “buy a new license” and “trial”.

The reasons I was dreading a clean install is: (1)I have a few programs from adobe that are full versions, not subscription like now. And I didn’t know where the licenses were. (2)I would lose the programs that i couldn’t find the licenses for. (3)Reinstalling would be a shore.

So, i did manage to reinstall photoshop, lightroom because the licenses showed up when i logged in to my adobe account. They are full versions, not subcriptions. I haven’t been able to reload acrobat X standard, which i got free when i bought a doc scanner. Although i did manage to move over a pdf organizer (scansnap) by just moving the file from the copy of my old windows installation copy of Program Files and Program Files x86 which i backed up. I did lose shortcut functionality from my desktop, so it takes 2 mouse clicks instead of 1.

ONE QUESTION: if i copy files of programs from the copy of my old windows install (which i kept a copy of Program Files and Program Files x86 folders), will they work as before? Haven’t tried it but am asking, and i will also research, if it is possible.

SOMETHING FOR “thevillageidiot” or anyone in the forum that needs help: i’ve had a blinds/drapery business for 30 years, if you need product or installation advice or pointers, or need product (i’m in miami) just let me know. I’ll do my best to provide any expertise.

I like the level1 channel, and this forum is also great. So happy Thanksgiving and Christmas to everyone. Funny story about this Thanksgiving: called my cousin to see if it was still on, i didn’t want to go really, he told me his son was sick. He’s ok but food for thought.

You can right click the .exe file in program files, and click create shortcut. Then it will create a shortcut, and you can cut and paste that shortcut to your desktop.

  1. Copy programm
  2. Insert shortcut
