Been looking around 20 minutes or so but cant find what i am looking for so here it goes.
personally i download some shady torrents etc and still only use windows defender since upgrading to windows 10 years ago never had a virus and still dont.
my question is are any anti virus/antimalware etc etc even worth installing? and using resources to run or is defender actually good enough? i see people say it all the time but i really just dont know. I am careful but hacks are getting legit lately and my luck will likely run out someday.
also what would be the biggest “mainstream” security threat?
its nice to be back on the forums. 9years lol man
I use that in conjunction with the following nagware apps:
Spybot: Search and Destroy for the Immunization feature mostly.
IObit Anti-Malware, Free Edition.
They are both nagware apps as the free versions will annoy you with pop ups trying to get you to purchase the PAY version
With every “normal” malware infection, it’s purely user fault. If your targeted then your just gonna get hacked regardless.
That said, using just windows defender is perfectly fine, depending on what practices you use to prevent infection in the first place, like having a good router firewall, vlan, intrusion detection analysis and automatic IP blocking in different stages since everyone and their dog is trying to getting into your network.
If you are curious there is a website I used to look into many years back, and their still around testing security suites:
As of writing, Windows Defender even beats paid products, and by far the easiest to use for the normal user. It may not be able to notify you about intrusions like bitdefender, but again, that’s if you have a good network setup and methodology.
Now, in regards to torrents, since you’ve said they are “shady”, we don’t discuss that here, so please don’t continue that topic further on.
spybot s and d is a classic but it was more of a post infection removal tool than a good real time scanner.
it was just to slow even in the IE days.
iobit, i wouldn’t touch with a barge pole. (a long stick) they have been repeatedly found to be using other antimalware providers hash lists.
i think kaspersky actually took em to court, after they found iobit catching false positives for hashes that only kaspersky threw up.
so they are about as legit as that 2 dollar bill printed on a milk carton.
for day to day defender will do the job but once a week/month/as and when/ run something like malwarebytes free.
if you want to go the whole hog then something like kaspersky or bit defender. anthing else paid just isnt worth the money…
oh but kaspersky is russian?.. and?..
kaspersky earned its reputation in the tech community as one of the best, as russian programmers are some of the best…
and it was only when defender (as it is now) went live, did the american government have an issue with kaspersky… (coincidence?)…
bit defender has consistently been a top performer for the last decade on independent antivirus test.
defender on the other hand didn’t make the list some years due to complete failure.
thanks for the info bib bod zod so all there really is to worry about is spyware still and malware? i currently use malwarebytes and have actually recovered older pc’s like 8 years ago from blue screens etc. my inlaws had a nasty virus and it got rid of it.
back in my world of warcraft days it was all key loggers, i assume people still use them? know anything about that stuff? my account got hacked like 8 times till i got authenticator lol
thanks for your time
thanks a lot for the info dude i’l check that site out. dint level1 youtube do a piece on kaspersky having built in back doors or something? i could be totally wrong but i feel i remember that.
gues i’l just stick with malwarebytes and windows defender(holy fuck it eats memory usage)despite forums saying dont install it, i did last year, but it was more trouble then it was worth. i spent a lot of time in the windows registry. just trying to break shit or make it better:) you know how it is. takes 2 minutes to install win 10 and i segregate it from a seperate install cause i memory overclock too much and it like to break usb ports etc lol or just the os. is ccleaner still ok to use? i mostly use it to disable hidden startup apps i find it more detailed then what microsoft reports. maybe i will make a seperate post or go browse the forums about ccleaner. i broke a win 7 install with the registry cleaner 1 time. now i read everything it finds lol
thanks for the fedback hexit
great post shukaze my recent googleing has also told me that windows defender is within margin of error with most anti virus’s i believe that to be true just for the sheer amount of memory it uses at idle lol i dont have to worry about wifi so much cause i live in the woods lol no one around so i’m lucky there my router is a Bell home hub 3000(you will have to google it and tell me if its any good cause i personally think it sucks but its highly rated) my weakest area for computers is networking and security. thanks for the heads up on the peer to peer stuff
ccleaner still works but its basically crapware now.
yeah all the original tools are there. but it wont stop itself from starting at startup, even when the prefs are set.
and then wants to sit in your task tray claiming its keeping your system safe…
so if you do use it i would recommend removing it as soon as your finished.
also be careful of the default install options. they have been known to add other bloatware apps.
yeah i also recomend use it to smash cookies and kill startup programs/registry errors. it also does a good job doing browser cleanup but does miss shit in mozilla
And by default removes any all cookies, save login info and anything that is convenient. I strictly use it for cleaning up the registry after “uninstalling” apps.
I never understood how an app that KNOWS where it’s putting it’s information in the registry and all over your HD, can’t seem to also REMOVE all those things it puts there. Sloppy removal programming by devs.
oh it can be fucking dicey cleaning registry, like i said i killed a win 7 install. havent had any on win 10 yet. or programs break.
I used to kill win 7/8 all the time with registry fun. I have yet to manage to kill Win10 messing in the registry and I’ve been using it in some form since Win10’s launch.
Ransomware, because everyone has data to loose.
Malwarebytes is a bit annoying with its regular pop-ups, comes in handy as a scan-now from context-menu though. Sophos Home is another option, last time I used it at home, it kept calm and did its thing in the background.
cool thanks mazeframe, i’m checking out that link now. yeah i usually uninstall malware bytes as soon as i’m done with it.
another question: do you know if the windows ransome ware stuff works? is it possible its like windows defender not and actually decent? thanks for the reply
i was googling and found this. just gotta find out if its legit.
Any and I mean ANY ISP router/modem is guaranteed garbage, the software is minimal and the hardware is laughable, and the ISP themselves can even remote into it anytime for reasons.
I never trust ISP equipment, unless it’s an FTTC or FTTN connection box, cause you can’t use the net connection without one if you have Aus NBN and if it’s required for the signal.
I would research and go buy one of your own, that’s my opinion. Depends on your networking needs as well.
I visit torrent and other odd sites with tons of dodgy ads and popups.
Defender detects nothing as I browse. It is fine at blocking nasty downloads.
I’ve use Kaspersky Total Security for 3 years now. It picks up so much dodgy stuff on the Web, and blocks it. I recommend Kaspersky.
You can get a licence key for & AU$20 (US$15) 12 Month, 3 Devices (Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone) . Depending on exactly which licence you get you can receive 3x 365 days for 1-3 devices. I have my Windows and Android on the one license, so (365 x 3) / 2 = 547 days on 2 devices. Great bargain.
I don’t care about the politics and propaganda against Kaspersky. Not interested in discussing that either.
