Windows 8 Wireless Issue

Hi everyone

Recently I moved house and therefore also moved my tower. As a result of this I have also had to change ISP from Virgin Media to EE (they were offering the best deal), worst decision I ever made but that's beside the point. When I have come to connecting my tower to the internet, through wireless, I have encountered a problem. Windows 8, or my wireless adapter does not seem to want to connect consistently. In the two weeks that the internet has been activated I have only managed a total of I would say an hour of internet use on it. Hence why I am having to use my laptop to write this post.

When I turn on my computer it connects to the network and then a yellow triangle with a black exclamation appears. When I mouse over to see what the issue is it says 'Unidentified Network' 'No Internet Access'. When I have searched these problems they seem to be a common issue with Windows 8, so there have been plenty of fixes available. None of which have worked. I have been trying whenever I have had free time to fix it, not much and when I have had time I keep giving up because it annoys me so much. I'm pretty glad that I can still get into Steam to play the games I already have installed.

So after 2 weeks of attempts to ix it and failing I am now contemplating either removing Windows 8 and reverting to Windows 7 to see if that works, buying a powerline adapter or getting a new wireless adapter. Before I do any of these things I thought I would ask here first to see if anyone would be able to help me with this issue. If anyone manages you will forever be my saviour, until something goes wrong again...

Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

Little extra information when I am running the stock Windows 8 troubleshooter the usual problems that are found are; '"Wi-Fi" doesn't have a valid IP configuration' and 'The default gateway is not available'.

I've tried the TCP/IP reset that is commonly recommended but it says that the reset has failed. I have also tried resetting Winsock, this hasn't worked either.

UPDATE:

I've finally had enough time to sit down and edit my router settings. The settings for channel was on auto so the router was changing them whenever it wanted. Didn't think that would be good so I've changed it to stay at 6 which WICD on my Linux laptop was showing said was the least used, except for my Chromecast. Speaking of which I get better signal from my Chromecast than I do from my router in my "office" room. Don't know if this a sign that I have been given a bad router or just that my ISP router is absolutely terrible?

Anyway, the internet on my desktop now works, sort of. Sometimes when I turn it on it has automatically connected then when I start downloading something the connection times out halfway through downloading it. This is when it goes back to having the limited access symbol over the Wi-Fi area in the toolbar. Other times when I turn the PC on it says that no networks can be found then when I troubleshoot settings it connects then does the same. I don't know if this is a sign that I should replace my wireless adapter.

In summary I am now completely lost as to what to do. I don't know what I should do anymore. I don't want to get a new router or wireless adapter only to discover it was the other thing that was the problem all along.

Some more help would be seriously appreciated.

I'll try the security settings thing first. I don't really want to spend money if I don't have to.

What sort of settings should I try to alter?

It only has one option. Can't remember what it's called. But I don't want to turn it down cos that will mean turning it off.

Thinking of trying windows 7 first then move from there.

Yeah, just annoying cos I already have an adapter. Thanks for the help anyway.

Run a live linux distro (usb or dvd) see if its better if not. If its better is software (windows) if not then its the adapter. Worst case your out of pocket <$20

Do a factory reset on the router, you won't believe how many times that has helped me when something starts acting funny.

Oh dear, can't believe I didn't think of this. I'll give it a go. Might be like a few hours by the time my internet downloads a distro!

Getting a modern WiFi might be very helpful however because i did not yet experience i don't have an idea if your problem will fix it ,cause even i work before in IT service or it palvelut i never experience using windows 8

Try, deleteing your old wifi connections config and profile and setting up a new one.
