Hello everyone, I need some help, I bulit my very own gaming PC and decided to try Ubuntu for the first time on it, only problem is the Wireless card drivers don't support ubuntu.
So, I considered Bridging connections, it have it working on Windows 8, but I go over to Ubuntu and I get the connecting icon for the longest time, untill it gives up.
I am open to any suggestions, so please do help if you can.
Did you install proprietary drivers?
Also exact make of wireless card.
CTRL + ALT + T then type lshw
its an encore Wireless N150, but acording to the lshw command it shows up as a Realtek RTL8188CE its a PCI-E card.
The Realtek is most likely for the LAN while the Encore is WLAN. Have you installed proprietary drivers? super key (windows key) or dash at the top left -> search Additional Drivers. Pick any proprietary drivers.
"No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" and it gives me a list of AMD and ATI drivers.
Is the encore wireless N150 a usb stick by chance? or PCIe?
Also later on I would recommend switching to the offical AMD drivers for the graphics card. The one right now are open source and tend to run hotter.
Well, I'm running an AMD APU system, no seprate GPU.
The software is still using open source drivers on the igpu. How vested are you in 12.04?
Well, not at all, I just went with 12.04 becaus eof the Long term Support.

The kernel isn't fully operating the wlan card. If seems a fresh install of the driver will fix the issue.
My personal recommendation is upgrading to 13.04. Not to use Wubi. Creating a seperate root and home partition and maybe a windows partition. I can give full instructions if interested.
The long term support doesn't work the way it sounds. Error reporting and troubleshooting still exist by Canonical but driver development is no longer in progress.
I can also give clarification on the installation steps of the website as well.
I never knew wubi existed, I'll upgrade using the built in upgrader, first to 12.10, then to 13.04
In windows the user gets to handle the driver updates.
In Linux the drivers are handled by the kernel. You'll notice things like firefox or chrome updating themselves with the rest of the hardware in the Software Updater. The biggest problems arise when the kernel is either too old or too new for current hardware.
Here are my sources for why there is reason to suspect kernel problems.
"note the driver listed, rtl8192ce, is indeed the correct one. However, looking closely, you will notice that not ALL of the information is there in the listing. I did a comparison with a working one (from Ubuntu 12.10, which installs with working WiFi right off the bat, on the same machine), and noticed that some info was missing, indicating that perhaps the operating system wasn't FULLY engaging the WiFi card."

I hope any of this has helped. If not I'll be back tomorrow if it's still troubleshooting. Laters
