(1.)My biggest problem with Windows 8 right now is that if I leave it alone, I guess it goes into hibernation. I don't mind this other than 3 points:
1. It goes off too quick
2. I cant wake it up by moving the mouse, I have to press the power button
3. It interrupts my downloads
It's almost like it is in tablet mode, doing this to save energy. Is there any way to disable this or have it more like Windows XP where I can rid myself of the three problems above?
(2.)What is the best office software? I want something to work on my resume that will be compatible with Office and wont cause the resume to look completely different when loaded on Microsoft Word. I'm looking at Open Office an LibreOffice.
(3.) When I installed Windows, I downloaded AVG Free, will this antivirus be sufficient?
Not sure about your first question since I use Win 7. But I can offer some advice concerning your second and third questions.
OpenOffice is a great alternative to Microsoft Word. It is also compatible. To ensure a document's integrity, I usually save my stuff in rich text format.
AVG is better than nothing. I would recommend that you also download the free version of Malwarebytes. It's a malware cleaner, meaning you only have to run it when you need it. Use it alongside AVG. If you notice your computer starts to slow down, run a full scan with Malwarebytes and it should pick up whatever is causing the problem. Keep in mind, antiviruses aren't a cure-all solution. You (the user) needs to make sure you are practicing safe surfing habits. Don't open weird emails or download attachments from people you don't know, etc.
I personally use Avast and Malwarebytes. They work well together. So far, I haven't had any viruses since I built my computer and put these two programs on my PC.
To turn off or shrink the hibernation file in Windows 8 press the 'Windows Key' + 'X' on your keyboard, click 'Command Prompt (Admin)' from the menu then type powercfg -h off then enter to delete it or powercfg -h 50 then enter to shrink it.
From what I have heard if you are producing serious work and want to ensure maximum compatibility you are probably best to stick to MS Office. Others can work but you can run into glitches when opening files with different programs and seen as most professional institutions and businesses run MS Office you are probably best sticking to it.
AVG coupled with Windows Defender should be fine, just keep them both updated. No single anti-virus/malware is going to catch everything though.
Thanks for your help. I have one more question though.
I moved all of my music over from my old pc, The programs are asking me for a license, it forces me to download it using Explorer. I copied the link to Explorer and went to the site, the download wont start. I made Explorer my default browser(I thought maybe it was being pissy because I copied and pasted the link). Now it opens directly to the link but I still cant get the download to start.
Wonder if thats the license for the windows media player, if so use something else . Goto Ninite.com and pick a freebee media player. Windows 8 doesnt include a media in all win8 versions. It doesnt break my heart since i dont use win media .
