I am a very frequent computer user and gamer, and with Windows 8 coming out, it has really enticed me to try it. Especially with it only being around $45. My biggest question I suppose is compatability issues. Will Steam, Skype, etc work just as well as on Windows 7? I've had my Windows 7 PC for at least two years now, and I've been happy with it, however I am about to buy a faster Hard Drive and I would actually rather start from scratch and be a bit better with my hard drive management, so starting with a new OS would also make sense.
Anyway, what are you thoughts on upgrading? Or should I just wait until a Service Pack comes out?
https://windowsupgradeoffer.com/ that will make it $15, if you want it, then get it. There is probably a compatability option in Windows 8 just like 7.
I have windows 8 pro on my laptop now, mostly because i need to keep the latest os running for my job and its ran every program or game that i could run on windows 7 with no problem although there is a lot of minor annoyinces that take some getting used to, id suggest buying it now while its cheap but wait until sp1 to install it.
The $15 is only if you've bought a computer before June if I remember correctly, and my computer is over two years old, so that isn't an option. I am buying a new Hard Drive, not a new computer entirely.
Meh I don't think it's worth it. I've used Windows 8 for more than 3 months and I even ended up downgrading to 7. Sure it's snappier, but I don't think it's worth the extra annoyances.
Start8 fixes most of it, but all it basically does is make it feel like 7 so why not just stay with 7?
+1 I use it on my primary desktop everyday and I would not go back to 7 at all. In fact, I still have to use Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 at school so I still use Windows 8/7 simultaneously day to day and I still prefer Windows 8.
I've been running Win 8 Pro for about a week now and i am pretty happy with it. However first thing i did after the install was getting the oldschool startbuttom back with "Classic Shell", as well as make windows load into desktop instead of modern UI. I have had almost no compatability issues except the driver for my wireless network device. Steam and skype worked perfectly for me sofar. If you dont have any problems learning the new UI or installing some workaround to avoid it, i guess Windows 8 is a pretty decent choise.
Don't, I just did fresh windows 8 install and it was awful. Drivers were terrible and I had major performance problems, I'm about to go back to 7. Also the folder system is not very responsive, the stock metro apps are terrible, like the mail has no features and I conldn't even connect windows live email to it,and there is nothing good on the metro app store.
The only good part was short boot time, task bar on extra monitors, and task manager looks cool but doesn't work well.

I've have to agree with you concerning the mail app. Allthough i kinda like the simplicity of it, it just seems kinda unfinished and it is definitely missing quite a few importants features. This is properly true for many metro apps. Luckely you're not forced to use the modern UI or the apps it brings and there are ways to avoid them.
