Windows 8.1 Bluray playback

Is there any conceivable way to get my LOTR Extended editions to play in Windows 8.1?

You can download VCL player. I think DVD & BR only play on 8.1 pro.

I tried that, and normally VLC solves everything. In this case, however, VLC didn't come with the codecs necessary to encode and decode the Bluray properly. Even after downloading it, Windows and VLC still wouldn't recognize the disc itself. It's beyond irritating that Microsoft completely removed compatibility with bluray discs.

The best way is using MakeMKV with VLC. MakeMKV does cost money but it works. I use it. Here is a tutorial on how to use it. Note it does cover installing on Linux but it then covers how to use it:

Sony is raping you so stop funding your own demise. :)

Thanks for the useless link, friend. I gather that you didn't read the part where I said I tried downloading the codec pack for VLC, then?

Nope. Covering the basics. Just in case. I would get a decrypter and convert it all to a more useful format.

the only software I know of off the top of my head that plays commercial blu rays is PowerDVD
