Hi, i have a OEM Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, will i be able to upgrade it to the Windows 10 and if so will i lose my copy of windows 7 forever or will i be albe to chose to install windows 10 or windows 7? Also what version of windows 10 will i get when i upgrade?
Yes you should be able to. The windows 10 technical preview that is out now has options on install and after install to revert to a previous stored copy of windows should you change your mind. It will install the 32bit or 64bit version based on which version is already present on the system.
If you have windows 7 as a digital download, then the digital key will still be yours to keep and should be stored on your Microsoft account. If you have a hard copy on disk then this point is moot.
I have one machine running the windows 10 technical preview at the moment which I upgraded from windows 7. If you're also asking which version as in "ultimate", "home" etc. then I'm not sure since that information hasn't been released yet.
i think only windows 8.1 qualifies for free upgrade to 10
Windows 7 is a free upgrade too.
Ya, I thought there were a few sites that reported that it would be free for both Windows 7 & 8 users. Thanks for linking one.
It does hint that this may be a limited "on launch" offer though. I'm guessing they'll probably move to a subscription service going forward much like their office 365 plans.
i stand corrected
not looking forward to the prospects of windows 10 being a 'service' hopefully the vulkan api takes off and i can get away from direct x 12 for gaming
I have a couple of added questions to this topic.
1: I have a student grade copy of 7, will this still qualify for upgrade?
2: If I upgrade to 10 can I take my hard copy of 7 and install it on a different machine so that I have PC1 running 10 and PC2 running 7?
@anarekist Microsoft said they will not be selling windows on a subscription model. Source: http://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-windows-10-will-not-be-sold-as-a-subscription/
Yes you should be able to upgrade.
Maybe. I'm not sure and I don't think there is an official answer yet either.
well, i'll believe it when it happens. i still remember all the back pedaling microsoft did with the xbone
Yeah but with the xbone microsoft was threatened to sell next to no units in comparison to the ps4. With this windows they'll already have everyone and anyone on a fully owned copy. They can't charge once you already own the license.
