Windows 7 or 8

Recently I upgraded my computer and had a OEM harddrive. A month later, my windows 7 in not genuine. I am wondering if I should go ahead and get Windows 8, or just get another copy of Windows 7? Both are the same price and such, and they are not doing any real updates from Windows 7 anymore. Also can I upgrade from 7 to 8 with a not genuine copy of 7?

You can upgrade from 7 to 8 with no problem on the ms website for $40 if you want to save some money but if you still want windows 7 then you will have to pay the $80 something to get a new cd/code.

Hope it helped!

If its the same price, then what does it matter? just get the OS you prefer.

I would say stick with windows 7 for now. When service pack 1 comes out for windows 8 read some performance reviews and such to see if upgrading would be for you. You have to remember that microsoft designed windows 8 with touchscreens and tablets in mind. The desktop was more of an afterthought to them in regards to windows 8. And no I am not hating on windows 8. Just giving my thoughts to try and help out :)

Windows 8 with Classic Start Menu installed. Works like a charm and everything runs faster than Windows 7. I have yet to run into a driver problem.

I will definately be checking out classic start menu if I ever upgrade to windows 8. How does that work is it an add on you download or is it like an app? Not a hack is it?

I think when I get 8 that I will not use the classic start menu. Sure 8's start menu is crazy hard to navigate, but it's a change and why not get use to something new rather than always sticking within your comfort zone

Classic Start Menu is just a program you download and install. It also allows you to make the start menu look however you want and function however you want. It allows you to boot to desktop and bypass metro all together if you so choose.  You can still get to metro by hitting Shift+Start key.  I actually prefer Classic Start Menu to any built in start menu I have ever used.

I've already stated reasons why I don't really like windows 8, but it really all depends on the type of hardware you are using and the what you are going to use the PC for. Gaming= windows 7. All of todays current gaming perifs and dedicated hardware are fully supported by windows 7. Windows 7 is a LTS build so it won't be going anywhere just yet. A lot of your options will be easier to find/mod/install/change/delete etc with windows 7. I had a hard time installing a fresh, legit, copy of photoshop onto windows 8 (Might have just been on my end). Also the creators of "Steam" said that they aren't to happy about windows 8, so take care in your choice, it sucks not being able to play your favorite game and your brand new $2,000+ gaming build. However on the other side of the tracks, windows 8 is better for most daily tasks such at sending emails, surfing the web, doing school work etc. ZombieKohhi had it right when they said that windows 8 was designed with a touch screen in mind.

Took the plunge and got windows 8. At like $15, definitely not risk factor. If I have any problems through, I will go back to windows 7.  Installed it today, and I will be sure to rant about it when I encounter issues with it.

I enjoy trying new things out. Like right now I am messing around with Ubuntu on my laptop, but it's not real happy with my GPU

I upgraded from 7 to 8 for 15 dollars, and I can still play every single one of my steam games without a problem. 100+ games and zero problems.
