Windows 11 Update Question

So I currently run on Windows 11 Pro, 23H2 and I’ve tried multiple times to update to even the latest 25H2 build with no success.

What is happening is that the network stack gets hosed and seems to only work as a Private/Local network connection.

Reinstalled the Intel 225V chipset drivers do not work.

I’ve even swapped between a DHCP and a Manual IP.

The Motherboard is an ASUS X670E-E Gaming Wifi model with a 7950X CPU and a 96GB RAM kit, Gskill.

I can always use the revert to an older build option and then things are working great.

It’s almost like the in-place Windows update is somehow hosing the network stack or something.

Since I have another NVMe SSD I can install a fresh copy onto this 4TB drive and see if this works.

Anybody got any ideas on this one or should I just try the new install and see what happens.

I guess it’s more of a learning thing but really wanted to know why the network goes sideways after the update.

I’ve updated a few other machines to 25H2 without this issue including one that uses the same Intel NIC device.

Not sure what type of error you’re getting other than the network breaking down.

  • Are there any errors in the 225V NIC once you have upgraded to 25H2 in Device Manager?
  • Sounds like for all intends and purposes, the NIC is “active” but doesn’t really do anything. Is this the exact case? Or is the behaviour a bit different?
  • Have you checked if the activity lights in the NIC blink at all one you upgrade to 25H2?
  • Have you checked if there are any warnings or errors in the “System” event log?

The only thing I initially noticed was that under settings → network, the network setting was on Private Network so I changed to Public Network but it didn’t change anything.

Under Device Manage the network driver was listed as active and working.

I then tried uninstalling the device and restarting, still behaved the same way.

I even tried uninstalling and deleting the driver package and rebooting and installing the driver package from ASUS’s web site, rebooted and tried again, still the same.

The activity LED is showing on, both the LINK light and the data light.

I’ve not looked at the system event log.

Can you try updating from iso on a pen drive instead of online? Disconnect ethernet cable then run setup.exe and update that way?

Did that too, using the 24H2 build and with the the media creation tool.

However I never tried updating while leaving the network cable disconnected.

Upgrading using the ISO downloaded locally should work. Try that and report back with the cable unplugged the whole time.

Asus uses it’s own firmwware and drivers for that NIC and I hate it. I have a few dozen AM4 and AM5 builds with the ASUS Intel 2.5 nic out in the wild under warranty or support contracts and they all have issues. Randomly disconnecting, not detecting cable at all, ignoring changes made in settings, countless little weird glitches and anomalies.

Trying to use it in Windows server, armory Crate will still try to Auto lnstall but fail because it’s Windows server and not regular Windows desktop but it tries anyway. None of the drivers will work because they say they’re only compatible with Windows desktop, not Windows server. And the Intel official drivers wont install because it uses a specific ASUS firmware and the installer doesn’t even detect a compatible intel card.

Problemsbexisted on earlier versions but 25h2 is worse.

My solutions so far has been to either force the intel drivers to install in device manager, which seems to work better. Or disabling it completely and use a USB 3 or pcie multigig NIC from relaltec (I know, that sounds blasphemous, but the Asus firmware/drivers are trash)

I have 20+ systems I built so far with Asus boards and the Intel NIC. The gamer customers seem to be less effected by the weird Asus anomalies, but the workstations, servers, and NAS devices I build with the mobos, that actually need the 2.5g bandwidth have the most issues.
