yes i hate to say it but i am really thinking of going to windows 10. I have been using windows 8.1 for a long time and my computer is okay in terms of power i have an i7 4790k clocked to 4.8ghz and sli 970s . So i use my friends windows 10 laptop which felt so smooth in terms of graphics and everything looked just fucking good. I am not switching to linux on this pc, i just want all the windows 10 UI benefits without risking my privacy because we know how it is. Is there a way i can upgrade and not have to give up all my private data , i see @wendell with windows 10 and if it’s good enough for him i guess it’s good enough for me. I just want your thoughts on this matter.
reformat PC and reinstall 8.1 and install updates (google a list of updates to avoid). Install Classic Shell on 8.1 and you’ll be fine. If privacy is important then 8.1 + classic shell is the way to go. Better control over the OS and privacy. Otherwise bye bye privacy and hello win10.
I would wait until the next release of windows and see if they actually do anything about the complaints. You wont get any privacy benefits from win10 at all. On fresh installs theres usually little performance differences between 8.1 and 10.
Reinstall your OS and see if it improves things first. you’d be surprised how many issues reinstalling can fix
…thanks
problem isn’t performance but more so it doesn’t feel buttery smooth like windows 10 or a new linux. i care about user interface too much.
Well you’ll have to pick then. privacy or smooth visuals. Can’t have both(not with Windows at least). Unfortunately that’s the state of things. There’s no simple solution. personally I would sacrifice every single UI animation to have better privacy.
There’s no privacy difference between 8 and 10.
Nothing wrong with 10 otherwise it’s a good Microsoft OS on almost every level.
Funny you should mention this, I have been experimenting on windows 10 for the past 2 months or so. Even thoungh I am only experimenting and there is nothing in the way of privacy, I still only allowed it to connect to ips I approved of.
But recently I got fed up with windows 10 (I was fed up with it 2 months ago) and switched to windows 7, and from a conceptual point of view windows 7 is better then 10 in everyway, its almost impressive.
Preformance-wise differences are insignificant.
You can use 10 and not sacrifice privacy by whitelisting ips at the router level. And updates deep breath you will have source and update manually (cannot use windows update). And a ton of things will need to be deleted from windows directory.
If I had to setup 10 to privacy standards I approved of, it would take me a solid 5-7 hours (testing included).
Personnally I’d just stick to linux+vms, I had enough of that stupid fucking win-blows

i just don’t want my keys logged or anything like that .
okay fine… is there a way i can get linux desktop environments on win 8.1 because all i want is a damn good u.i
You can always use rainmeter or other ricing softwae to override the default windows UI.
i do lol its just not as nice looking as win 10
IDK what to tell you dude, just accept the spying if you want it that bad. Maybe set up a BSD router and whitelist that box to only connet to the game servers you play.
Cute, apart from the telemetry apis that are integrated into the shell. You cannot remove all telemetry without affecting the shell and explorer. The best that could happen is windows crashes on login (my best outcome). The only way would be to whitelist at router level.
Next, windows update… deep breath …and thats all I have to say about that. It will change or anything it doesn’t like, I have seen it restore system32 files that I removed.
Windows firewall rules, HAHAHAHA that doesn’t do anything
There is the chinese version, but I am done, fuck windows THE 1000S OF HOURS I SPENT FROM WHEN I WAS JUST A TEEN MESSING AROUND WITH XP, I COULD HAVE HAD MY OWN LINUX DISTRO BY NOW!
Man theres some serious tin foil going on in this thread.
This should be all you really need to reduce the telemetry to minor levels. I run it after most major updates. just to make sure things are still set the way I want them. For the most part everything is.
You could also run a copy of LTSB unactivated.
Unrelated:
People bitch about the telemetry in 10 but still continue to use their androids and google chrome. Its always been the popular thing to jump on the microshaft hate train but they’re far from the first people to shit on your privacy.
Thats true, Google knows more from you, than yourself, and actually win 8.1/8 and 10 have the same telemetry stuff, damn i think that W7 has the same, so just embrace it and become one of the big data, Google/Apple already knows everything.

These technocratic overlords are really pissing me off. I’m about to go back to a flip phone, and I’m thinking of accelerating my move to Linux. It might not be perfect, but damn them for their ever increasing bullshit.
It’s not just the telemetry, it’s the forced updates. I want to control when they happen, and I don’t want to be forced to take huge updates that remove or cripple features, or fundamentally change the way things work.
Unfortunately that seems to be the way it is these days. Some guy was complaining on Slashdot about how Tesla kept removing features from his car via forced software updates. A lot of apps have been replaced by websites that can change any time, and even the apps stop working if you don’t update them.
I’m not sure if forced OS updates is the last straw or if I’ll eventually accept it due to lack of viable alternatives.
This…
It’s the only and last means to keeping some control over windows.
Until the update that starts crippling features of Windows until you allow it to phone home.
