Windows 10 update changes power settings [W10 Pro fix]

After the update from a few days ago, on cold boot Windows changes ‘Power Setting’ to ‘Balanced’. I always have it on ‘High Performance’. It also ignores ‘Ryzen Balanced’ as do I.

So if your PC is slower than usual and you are Ryzen, check it out.

Update: W10 Pro Fix - Windows 10 update changes power settings [W10 Pro fix]

Mine stayed on High Performance where i left it

I turn my PC on and off two to three times a day when not rendering. It has switched it several times on my X399 and X370 builds.

I’ll keep an eye on mine and report back.

Back when I had a work xps machine, windows update would frequently mess with my power settings.

…Either that or there was some stupid group policy nonsense going on at my work place.

Again this morning, power setting changed from high performance to balanced on Threadripper.

The X370 has not been shut down since yesterday so no change.

Put on suspiciously shiny and thin hat.

What if as part of fixing this, Intel working with Microsoft suggested these power changes were made to help with what ever issue is happening, regardless of if it actually helps. But rather than applying the update on a hardware checked basis to Intel systems where possibly and necessary Intel whispered sweet noth… Benjamins in Microsoft’s ear to intentionally hurt AMD who are rightly poking the bear quite hard over their self made decade long messup.

Issues found.
Solution agreed.
Patches readied.
Money exchanges hands.
AMD mysteriously in also suffer performance losses that should not exist, bring them back in line with previous Intel dominance.

You are Intel, correct?

nope ryzen 1600x need to update my profile

That is tin foil hat taken too far

The people who would notice(enthusiasts), would notice and the people who wouldn’t notice (mainstream) wouldn’t notice.

Mine changed also… I have a whole series of weirdness to sort. Impacts with the way some software works ect… chasing ghosts again :frowning: I have been holding off digging in to all of this till everything drops and then a nuke/ rebuild and test/bench .

Agreed.

It killed my Asus AI Suite 3 software. Major problem because I use that for my water pumps and rad fans. Luckily there was a new Beta of the software I could get through the ROG forums that is working.

I will check when I get home and provide Intel feedback

Updates and testing is only happening now really. So it may only be starting to show.

Younare correct though. It was purely speculation and whimsy. Scarily though, history considered, I could totally see it happen. Intel are a petty company.

Got a link to that? I haven’t opened UI Suite yet but I don’t think I’ve gotten the update yet either (computer hasn’t been on in days…).

Ran a check for updates, I still have High Performance as an option and it is checked. Interestingly enough, on my laptop with a fresh install of 1709, it only has Balanced as an option. With updates, it brings High Performance back.

- Shrug -

Input from an Intel user. Hope this helps.

As a note… my settings got changed from a customized Ryzen plan back to Balanced… but no idea when this happened. Could’ve been the FCU, could have been earlier, I just never look at that setting.

I always have Asus AI Suite 3 open on right monitor. I can see CPU speed clock down to 2200 which only balanced does. Ryzen balanced never down clocks that much so I know to check and change. It only started with the update for ‘Meltdown’ or an update that came with it.

Cold boot, again this morning, back on balanced.

So from cold boot it is on ‘high performance’, but a few minutes in, it changes to ‘balanced’. I literally have settings open and watch it change in real time.

So I used gpedit.msc and forced a power plan.

Local Computer Policies > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Power Management >Select a Power Plan Double click and enable. Use down arrow and select high performance.

This has solved my issue, however you need Windows 10 Pro to do this.

Bizarro.

I’ve gone through four reboots since I noticed mine had changed and it hasn’t moved.
