So I have been running the windows 10 technical preview for awhile now as my main OS and it is pretty good so far. There are a few "features" I find annoying like the transfer of the control panel into the settings app but that is a whole different topic. Today I want to rant about the update system. The actual windows updates are fine but it is what windows shouldn't be updating that is the problem. I am talking about my amd display driver. At first I thought that the updating of drivers through windows was a great feature since I generally don't bother to update my drivers unless it is absolutely needed. So let it do the updates but little did I know it was installing the beta drivers which cause graphical glitches, crashes, and even an occasional bsod while playing my currently favorite game, Euro Truck Simulator 2. It took me a good couple of days to figure out that it was the beta drivers and after I reinstalled the right drivers it seemed fine until they released a new build and then I ended up with the beta drivers again. I reinstalled and this time I found the setting to control these updates and turned them off. Then a couple days ago they released the newest build and today I go to play ets2 and the graphical glitches are back. So as I am reinstalling my drivers for the 3rd time this month I am considering downgrading back down to windows 7. The fact that every new build microsoft releases for windows 10 resets certain settings and the fact that some of these setting like, the automatic driver update setting, go into effect without you knowing and change things on your computer without you knowing just really pisses me off. I mean surely microsoft has gotten some complaints about this but they have yet to fix this because they are busy designing shit recycling bin models and having cortana track and record even more of your personal data. You know if it wasn't for the gaming market I would probably be on linux by now.
Dude you're mad cause things aren't working properly?
You're using an OS that is IN IT'S BETA STAGES. of course things aren't going to work. It's not perfectly stable. and if you checked around. Microsoft Clearly stated that don't install the most recent build 10122, cause its broken with AMD cards.
Windows 10 build 10122: Here are the known issues
the funny thing about this, is that gaming is fine on Linux. the games list are growing. no one is stopping you from jumping on Linux but you. The issues you are having is your own fault. for installing a Technical preview on your gaming PC and not reading around prior to installation. since you are on the technical preview. i recommend you Pin that Website to your favorites or keep a Tab open on your web browser. they update news on the OS as soon as it is announced or released.
Beta stuff is Beta? I don't want to jump to conclusion but am I missing the point here?
Ok yes I get that it is in beta but the thing I was really trying to get at is that this has been going on through many of their builds not just the latest which does not appear to be broken with the amd card (haven't read that article yet though) but the real question I should have put in the original post is that when they release windows 10 will it still reset some of your settings on update and will it stil detect beta drivers as the latest driver? I get that for now when it is in beta I am going to have these problems and I knew that when I installed it but it just bugged me that it hasn't been fixed yet. And about the Linux thing I get that the game market is growing and there are ways to play other games I just don't have the time to find the right distorted and then jump through the many hoops just to play a simple game.
Who knows, but Microsoft! shrugs shoulders
I agree with most people that this is probably a beta issue....however I really do not think MS should be touching the video drivers at all unless specified by the user.
There is a Windows Feedback application included in the Technical Preview
That is where you should post suggestions and complaints as well as any errors you face.
Ranting about it on the forum won't help. Microsoft won't see it, so it won't get fixed.
As for driver issues many drivers won't be released until Windows 10 is on store shelves.
You can disable the update settings in the control panel. Yes it's still there as a standalone application.
As far as beta drivers go, Microsoft is applying the drivers that have the Windows 10 signature in them, and that is currently only 15.1+ for Catalyst. Originally Windows 10 Preview would use the 14.4 set, which works but it's horribly slow on anything new.
In short, use the control panel to disable the automatic update system so you can CHOOSE to update to the newest build, and also keep Catalyst 14.12 handy for if you need to do a quick "downgrade" for when the beta drivers get loaded. It takes a couple minutes and Catalyst will keep your profiles so long as you don't change GPUs.
