Not really much you can do about it. PFSense with time limit on the internet could help, but pulling the plug is easier.

This has been a gripe of mine since I upgraded my daily driver rig. If there are updates pending and I sleep the machine, anywhere between two to five minutes the machine is waking back up. This is not desired behavior! Just one more reason to switch to linux.

i can't really switch fully to linux because a lot of games and programs i use is windows only. i am however going to try linux on my school laptop

You could just not use windows.

as i said earlier a lot of my programs and games are windows only but i want to try linux on my school laptop.

Doesn't even have to be linux :P Could be OSX too

Yeah I'm the same way unfortunately. However I did make the switch at work. I've got mint 17 running on my work issue laptop and I virtualized my windows 7 install into a Vbox VM. Ironically I've given the VM less resources than it had when it was the host and it runs faster and smoother. Go figure.

edit: Which reminds me, I should look into doing an in place upgrade to 18 soon.

Disable Windows 10 updates via GP. This will kill all automatic updates. You will simply get a notification when updates are available, but downloading and installation is entirely up to you. Basically how it was in Windows V/7/8.

I rolled back to Windows7 a while back, pretty happy with it. I do dual boot with Linux also but sometimes that lets me down with drivers functionality limits.

You could dual boot. Use linux for daily driving and then reboot into Windows for gaming or whatever. Or use a Windows vm inside of linux.

I would suggest hibernating instead of sleeping. Because the session is saved to the HDD Windows is unable to wake it and update. I hibernate when I'm not using my PC so I can choose to update Windows on my terms, when I want.

You should disable sleep hiberation functions. Either on or off. Never something inbetween. Avoids tons of issues :)

Windows 10, confirmed Microsoft's personal botnet.

Sounds like something has gone wrong with windows update. You are usually better taking time out to ensure it catches up on everything. If it cannot install updates for some reason, there is a way to clear the cache of updates. Try googling clearing windows 10 update cache, try those steps, and then let windows do its thing.

If you decide to turn off automatic updates, be a good idea to ensure they still get installed from a security perspective.

i have readed with certain versions of Windows10 after the aniversary update, this doesnt seem to work anymore?
I´m not fully sure, but i think that i have readed it somewhere.

Try local group policy.

GPEdit > Administrative Templates > Windows Components

Change "Configure Automatic Updates" and set it to "Notify for download and notify for install".

Maybe that will help. It's worth a try.

I found it when I was poking around in the settings a little while back and I haven't had any random restarts since.

Power options>high performance

Also, you can use this tool to reset windows updates and app store.

I wanted to do the latest updates on my barely ever used windows ssd for my desktop gaming computer because some friends were very excited about the fps gains in cs:go and some other games with all the latest trimmings, and they wanted to play a few games on Saturday to celebrate the beginning of the winter gaming season lol.
So I plugged in the ssd, which had an install of W10 updated to just after the anniversary update, and to be honest, it took very long, and at the end I found out that none of the audio interfaces worked (there are 8 audio interfaces on my machine, so enough to know that the problem was Windows).
I had to perform an sfc /scannow
It's just sad how horrible of an experience W10 is compared to W7 or WXP, and especially sad how horrible it is to even bleeding edge linux users like myself. I don't have half of the problems with bleepin' gentoo or arch development branches...

Working on my next strip the crap out of windows till it is almost breaks. With that in mind tho ? The core of windows sends telemetry and still has to be firewalled but i have managed to reduce it a great deal. Let finish my pfsense build then on to the new windows strip fest. :)
