Okay I am going to try and keep this as simple as I can, as it seems everyone is chucking in their 2 cents on how bad it is.
Personally I love windows 10! yes there are some things I don't like and tbh I was really worried as W7 was so deeply embedded in my workflow. However it is everything I wanted it to be, Windows 7 with a fresh UI overhaul and some neat convenient features, love the new start menu and app integration is neat and well executed for my use, notifications and cortana are very welcome too! Although I am yet to use Cortana as voice recognition.
I havent noticed any performance increase really, but I didn't expect it too really.
I have installed W10 on about 4 computers and only had 1 issue with it hanging for 12 hours (which I think was a user error tbh)
Anyway... the elephant in the room!
Security!
I will try and keep this quick, but overall quite frankly I don't care! Yes MS have made a fair few bad decisions but I don't think they should be demonised, as at the end of the day they are a company and want to make money! like everyone else. Of course they data gather every tiny thing they can... its how they sell stuff! Why would you not want personalised adverts?? Google does this and hardly anyone complains?? I would rather have adverts targeted at what i like rather than random junk, and if dont have the state of mind or self control to not buy everything that is suggested then thats your problem. umm what else... cortana listening in on what you say, reading your emails etc... well yeah duuur, facebook, google do this? what do you expect? i understand some people maybe no tliking this but honestly if your that paranoid or have something to hide then don't use email and what do you honestly think the will do with your "genital warts" search history? I remember a quote of logan roughly saying something like "once people thought it would be okay to put down their religion on a piece of paper, then the holocaust happened" I mean seriously, what an insult to all them people. Thats tin foil hat gone crazy. Also i understand some people don't want to upgrade are getting pestered with forced updates etc... and this is a mistake of MS but at the end of the day they have a massive flaw in not doing something like this sooner (cloud based - last version) as so many people still rely on vista, XP, W7 and have no need for w10 and their infrastructure is based on these old systems, its a big issue for them. however this is not the fault of the consumer I agree.
Let me know if i have missed any other key "problems" with windows 10 and I will address them.
Final thoughts... Please don't "hate on me" i just feel people are joining on some band-wagon to demonise MS and seem to forget the world we live in and the direction it is taking, MS are far from the greatest evil in the world. Us sitting here complaining about how we cant play gta on linux is very far from the worst thing, its just a computer, lets get things into proportion
I'm with ya dude. I understand people like Linux. But I feel like this forum is heading in the direction that if you want to be cool and normal and accepted you have to use all AMD and Linux. Ussualy was I see is "oh you use nvidia? Have fun using a card from a dictator" then the "oh windows is absolute peice of garbage! Totaly unusable and can never get anything done! Plus is spies on you and watches you go to the bathroom! Linux is better cause Logan says so and we worship him cause we have nothing better to do"
Haha maybe I went to far with that last one. But you get my drift.
Totally agree, my worries are the same, I got a torrent of ... well not abuse... but very strong/aggressive opinions when a few months ago i was deciding between AMD/NVIDIA
I have a lot of respect for logan and the team, but I feel this channel is going along the lines of LTT in terms of getting some angry cult following of people that live and breath off what Logan says rather than formulating their own opinions. This is not anything against logan or the team but more how a community gathering responds to someone they admire or look up to in someway...
I do think people are bandwagon-ing to hate on microsoft while often accepting google doing the same. I do not think we should be totally okay with it though. I enjoy windows 10, but I went through all the steps to lock it down. I won't use Cortona, but if someone wants too I'm not going to be that guy that shames them for doing so.
What really bugs me is everyone trying to throw linux now at people that are not ready to switch to linux. If you like linux, go ahead with using it, I have no quarrels with that. I myself even use linux for a couple things. But, its not for everybody. And some some people around here would like to say that everyone needs to switch today, and that would not end well for a lot of people. It's not a bad operating system, but its not for everybody yet. When Linux has Windows-like ease of use, and is as intuitive as Windows is for the common person, then it will be ready for everyone. Until that time, there is a majority of the populous that is just not ready to run it everyday.
I also use Windows 10, and I really like it. And I don't think the kind of anonymized data harvesting they are doing is that harmfull. Also they are many things people can turn off if they are woried. Logan and Barnacles have made youtube tutorial about that. (too lazy to grab the links, sorry).
And I agree, the way they harass to do the upgrade is annoying. And downloading stuff on people's computer without their concent is bad. (I live in a country where datacap is not a thing on home internet conexions. But still, I understand).
So yeah... They aren't that nice, but they aren't the evil either...
The issue with W10 is you pay for it twice. If you buy a a machine with it on it you pay a MS tax. That's fine you have to pay for development. The same goes for when you buy a license when you build a machine. After that you continue to pay with your data. Google doesn't have a ChromeOS or Android tax.
Both Google and MS can be defanged. But advertising in the start menus and office 365 nagging is too much. Now if I pay for a pro copy of W10 I expect to be able to control updates. More than once they have reset my update settings. It is sad that I have resorted to blocking MS servers on my firewall.
There have been bad updates one borked our photoshop machine. Another decided to update GPU drivers on my rig. Broke it.
Having to babysit updates is a waste of time. I would rather use the dev preview VM as a dev playground rather than a coal mine canary.
On to the free upgrade:
People have legitimate reasons to not wasn't to update from 7. Legacy and in house software takes time and money to update. In my case RS 232 support is shit in anything past W7. Stop forcing it down our throats.
On the business side the only two features that hold any interest is improvements to power shell and convergent UI. Smaller shops that may not have enterprise don't want social media and candy crush on their machines. This is the least pro version of windows to date.
MS would be well served to have two versions. A paid or more expensive version that leaves all the consumer shit at the door. Theh could totally do a discount or free version that has all the meta data stuff. We all have to eat right?
I don't hate windows, I have it on 4 machines and 2 VMs.
Just wish MS would get their head out of their rectum.
Even then, if it just is the same as Windows for your average person and cost isn't really a factor for many, because it comes with the PC, no one will switch.
I don't get that assumption. "I have something that I know how to use and works for me. I know. Let me switch to something that I don't know how to use." That won't happen as it simply doesn't make sense. If you have something that works and you know how to use why switch? Especially to something that you don't know how to use and doesn't work for you all the time?
No Linux hate here. I have an SSD with it on it. I play around with it from time to time and I understand why some people would want to use it but for your average consumer? Nope. Desktop Linux for a majority of people won't be a thing. Especially not now as mobile encroaches on the traditional desktop space.
All want is a proper version of pro. I'll pay the money. Don't have the time to deal with MS running up and kicking me in the nuts every couple of weeks.
I think that if public image of microsoft continues to go down the shit hole, that there is a chance that eventually people will start to move away from microsoft products. If a company's software isn't seen as a trustworthy place to put of your data, then eventually people will seek out alternatives.
But, if microsoft gets their shit together I think the damage done can be easily repaired. It may just be that case that if microsoft shuts their mouths, that everybody will eventually will get over it and except the risks. My parents were apprehensive to buy android phones because it was owned by google, but now they go through a new android every 2 years...
I like OEM PSU's, Rush Limbaugh, AMD APU's and Liberty University...........ok hate problem solved:) If I was concerned about security I would not post anything......ever I have had some strong disagreements but we are light years from den of depravity that is LTT I liked MS-DOS more then Linux in the 486 days...........oh %&^*!........incoming....gotta go:)
I guess this is true, but my point is that im not bothered, it doesn't really effect me, targeted ads etc.. no t something that bothers me and I can ignore or like
Advertising? I personally don't have this, how do you mean?
Totally understand this I guess thats an early adopter thing (not that it makes it okay and even worse considering some forced W10 updates etc..)
I agree not everyone has a reason too or wants to update, due to legacy features etc... Im cool with that
Maybe inside the bubble of tech heads we live in, but for your average consumer who doesn't know about PCs or cares about company politics, their reputation in fine. Everyone still uses Windows. I'm seeing more and more Surfaces. (Surfai?) Those thingys out and about. Their share price is going up. Really, Microsoft is doing fine.
The Xbone hurt their reputation more but people sorta see that as a separate entity and don't make the connection.
