Win 11 Pro + ASUS X670E-E Gaming Wifi + AMD 7950X CPU

So I recently setup a new WS for my email and VM usage.

Everything has worked pretty well but noticed some stuttering with both the main/host OS and the VM’s I was running.

I then suspended the VM’s and was testing just the HOST Windows 11 Pro and still had the same issues.

So I closed all the apps, waited a few minutes and opened the apps back up one at a time, mostly web browsers with multiple tabs open.

The stuttering was still there so I rebooted the OS and checked the settings.

One of the things I did was to replace the RAM that I had with higher capacity sticks, a matched pair of Gskill 48GB, DDR5, 5200 modules.

So when I checked the memory speed, it was still at the default of 4800 so I adjusted the settings to be 5200 without adjusting anything else, no voltage tweaks or anything on the timings side.

Saved and exited the BIOS and loaded the OS once again, now things are running without the stuttering on both the Host OS and the VM’s.

I wonder if just rebooting was needed and not the memory speed tweaks.

I wouldn’t think that a 400MHz tweak would make that much of a difference.

The kit is not an XMP nor EXPO rated kit so I will be checking on that down the road.

Has anybody seen this before ?

Also has anybody used an EXPO kit of RAM with a 7950X cpu at say 6000 ?

My older Gskill 64GB kit ran fine at EXPO 6000 with this same CPU so not sure if getting the faster RAM kit would be needed or not.

I mostly want the capacity vs. speed but hated that noticable stuttering.

Set the ram back to 4800 to find out.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that very same thing, it was the only other thing I tweaked while reviewing the settings.

If this indeed causes the issue to come back, then why a 400MHz tweak make such a profound performance change

EDIT: also I have confirmed that I have the Windows KB performance tweak installed for 23H2 that helps resolve some of the Ryzen latency/lag.

The advised speed from AMD is 5200 max
I run an Asus proart x670e - creator wifi mobo
Cpu 7800X3D
Gpu asus tuf rx 6800 xt gaming oc

with 2 dimms being g.skill F5-6000J3238F16G so 32 gb ram
When i ran them on EXPO many files in Steam either crashed/hang or files are being corrupted on my 2 nvme drives being the boot one 2 TB the games and tools one is 4 TB

However mem test does not reveal any mem errors
Then decided to let the shop who sold me the memory to test it and they found nothing when ran it on 6000 which i kinda do not believe at all.
As on local forums in the Netherlands revealed the same memory kit is showing up many times as having the exact same problem for others

Now when i lower the mem speed to 4800 i have not seen any errors or crashes at all
And to be honest faster memory does not really show any performance gains besides in silly benchmarks
The reason why i use the proart is that i wanted to use to speed up the data i send to my NAS which has a very expenssive high speed 10 Gb network card with 2 x 800 GB nvme ssd as buffer
But now i detected the silly used NIC on this board is not as good as my old 10 Gb nic

Anyway back on topic i see hardly any gains at all with mem speeds over 5200
The sets i tested had complete weird results or problems untill i kept it at the given speed as AMD recommends to use.

Even between 4800 and 5200 i hardly see any improvement at all just minor improvements in some situations

So going for high speed memory seems to me as a not so wise choice.

My time into the IT business has shown me that often less speed is better

Try to reboot your router.
If everything you do relies on internet, the great chance that causes stuttering is your internet.
