As most of you probably know, Intel has been talking about soldering their LGA 1155 processors to the motherboard, thus making upgrading virtually impossible. I just built a new system this October with a LGA 1155 processor and Z77 motherboard. Do you think my next upgrade should be to LGA 2011/X79? I realize this rumor hasn't been officially confirmed by Intel, but it kind of makes sense.
My only problem with upgrading to X79 is the fact that it's so dang expensive. I would probably want to go for the GA-X79-UD5 motherboard, which would run about $290. On top of that, I'd need a new processor, so I might as well go for the i7-3930K, about $560, along with an H100i to overclock a bit. Because the board is Extended ATX, I would ALSO need a new case to house it. That's a pretty expensive upgrade.
So, what do you think I should do? What will you be doing if you are on LGA 1155/1156/1366/775?
I have just bought an Intel i7 3770k - I will not be upgrading until the next mainsteam/enthusiast socket comes out. Also, even though they may be soldering the processors on the boards, there are so many motherboards and processors that haven't been sold and will take a long time to. You will always be able to find what you want, be it online or in your local hacker group (hacker of electronics, not a malicious cracker.)
I think the whole thing of soldering to the mobo was just internet rumors, but could be a possibility in the distant future. As for now intel stated that they are committed to socket CPUs in the near future(ie 2013 and 2014).

Intel has come out a squashed the rumour. As for 2011 I can say from personal experance it's amazing. I'm running a 3930K and I couldn't be happier. Not sure I'm going to be able to keep up with the upgrade path, as this last build was paid for by an unexpected lump of cash.
Already at 2011. =3
Broadwell will be soldered to the motherboard for 1155. There is no rumor.... Intel has been integrating everything into the CPU for the past few generations. Due to the initial shock and customer feedback, AMD as well as Intel said that they will be committed to sockets. It's true, Intel isn't going to "completely" integrate the CPU into the mobo, and AMD said that because they had too..
But broadwell will be intregrated for the 1155 socket.
