Will this work? hardcore editing/gaming

ok, so this is my first post, and the first time building a rig, im a photographer, film maker, (not just a kid with a dlsr, i asure you :P) and a gamer.

iv been editing on a 15 inch i7, 16gb ram, 256gb SSD macbook pro for about a year now, and its just getting painful, im editing 36mp files, and 4k video.

my 18th birthday is coming up, and iv had this epic rig in my sights for years...

im not sure on the components, but i have a rough idea, i know it might seem overkill, but dad is paying for it, and he said to make it the best posible so he never has to add to anything, so im running with his wallet :P

basicaly i want to know...

-what do you think?

-should i overclock? does it degrade life span?

-will it turn on? (psu enough)

-will everything connect ok? (all the right cords included? like an sli bridge?)

-is there anything i should be concerned about?

thanks!!

So, what kind of editing are you talking about? If it's video editing or the like, I wouldn't recommend OC'ing, from personal experience, the system was stable, yes, but the problem came around when rendering 10-15 videos at a time, most 5-10 minute reviews, then came rendering a 30 minute video, and skipped frames or bad timecode.  Things like that.  Those specs seem fine for editing, but check out the 7870, they smash the hell out the 660s.  Also, for the 2TB raid, you mean raid 0? Speed? Or are we talking about raid 1/10/01?

im rendering timelapse footage, and exporting it as full res 4k video,
the reason i picked the 660ti's is because of the cuda acceleration with adobe programs.
and i just want a straight miror as back up so im going with the raid 1, i have a complicated workflow involving multiply external hdd back ups, and the raid 1 idea is just simple and easy for me.

I'd say go for raid 10, speed and mirroring.  Yea, go for the 660 then, if that is the case, I'm holding out for the inevitable openCL acceleration, personally.

Is the 64GB RAM because of the rendering? (I don't know anything about the demands of video editing) This whole rig is awesome and I'm jealous that you're fixing to get it at only 18.

Yep, the 64GB is going to be for his rendering, he could get away with crazy fast 32GB, that is DDR3 2400 at a low cas, like 9 or 10, that's the route I'm going, was thinking 64GB originally, but faster is better for AFX and Premiere.

Also, personally I wouldn't go with a TN panel for video/photo editing, get a good IPS panel, it'll cost a bit more, but you will be happy as hell, try to get one that sticks within 92% - 96% sRGB/RGB gamut.  Seriously, I run two 2209w's, and yes I bark about it a lot, but they are super sharp, anything I produce on this PC, with these screens, which are calibrated, and it goes to print, what print is IDENTICAL to what is on screen.  I never got that with shitty TN panels, and I personally don't care about the leaps and bounds, they are not 10 or 8-bit panels, which have gone down in price, a lot.  Trust me man, I have done a lot of work :)

yea i know, i cant afford tripple ips, but i already have an ASUS PA238Q 23in IPS that i have been using as a preview monitor for my mac, and i will just have it to the side of the 3 tn panels :D

yea, it is, im rendering video files that are over 4 times that of an hd video ( 4096 × 2160 ) so basically imagine trying to render 4 hd videos at once haha

and thanks :D i dont want to sound like some rich kid though, i have worked super hard to pay for all my equipment, and now mum and dad just want to help me out with my career.
ill be getting it all in about a month and ill be sure to post up nice high res pics, and you can look forward to some cool videos of the setup build :P

If you want to overclock, it would be better to go with a 3930K. You could probably drop some of the ram too if you need to save some money.

even if he's not OCing he needs to go with the 3930K, it has 6 cores, the one he listed had 4

670s have higher memory bandwidth, if you can tell me how much exactly he's willing to spend I can adjust accordingly

thanks man, i actually have the 3930k planed, i dont know what happend with the one i list, opps.

thanks, im kind of at my threshold 6k after all the extras i need, and im just going with 3gb 660ti's so i can get a 700 series card in the future, and thanks for all the part reconmendations, sadly im in australia and cant order from new egg, and the shop i order from doesnt stock most of those things at those prices, thanks though!
but um, do you think 32gb ram will do?

ah australia, I've lost the site that I use for there, but if you can find a PCI-E SSD, those things get like double the speeds of SATA

ok, cool! i didnt know that
