Will this router be ok for my use? Or do i need to get a new one?

Ok i am moving in with a friend soon and we have gotten the fastest internet the town has to offer(12mbps down 1.5mbps up),i already have a router, but i have never internet this fast, and i have no idea if the router will be good enough.

It is a Linksys WRT54GS,i also have an ethernet hub,but i know nothing about it lol here is a pic i found online of it.

the stuff i have to hook up is an xbox,ps3,and mabye my server tower, and that is just in the living room, then i need to also hook up the a pc in each of the 2 bedrooms, and then 2 laptops using wireless.

If you guys think i need a better router can suggest one for $100 or less, and i still may have to wait to get it.

Yes, that router will be ok. Is that switch 10/100 or 10/100/1000?

Thank you letting me know, and for pointing out DD-WRT,also idk about the switch, all i know about it is the model number on the bottom which is: WS-T008CT/M

The only other info it says other than the FFC stuff is it says on the front Ethernet Hub for Workgroups.

Thats all i know about it,i was not the one who bought it it was givin to me a few years ago.

Cool. For the internet and some gaming, that switch will be fine. For file sharing over your local network... no... it will be insanely slow.

Ok i think i will use them both for now then save up till i can afford to get better stuff.

Can you suggest some to to get?I would prefer to spend less than $100 for both i am willing to spend as much as $125.

Also is it going to hurt my speed using a 50ft ethernet cable to get internet to the bedrooms?

If you have an old PC lying around then i would turn that into a pfsense router/firewall, a tutorial on pfsense has already been put up on the razetheworld youtube channel so that should be enough to get you started. All you need to buy is 1 or 2 10/100/1000 NIC's and you should be fine (that shouldn't cost you more than $100 if you look around on newegg)

i wouldnt call 12 MB/s slow....

What would the lowest specs needed for a pfsense router/firewall?

Cause i have a few old pc's lying around, but most are kinda old(single core lol).

Also i have some old PCI ethernet card(single port)but i think they are only 10/100 not 10/100/1000,would they be usable?

It is slow compared to Fios(which is what i really want)but they don't offer it anywhere near by lol.

I am not sure what the requirements are but they are most certainly not high. A single core machine would be perfect, it's not overkill but its not too little. You should really go to the official pfsense website and check out the hardware compatability list to check if your NIC is supported.

I checked there site and found out the system requirements here they are:

CPU - 100 MHz Pentium
RAM - 128 MB

Requirements specific to individual platforms follow.

Live CD
CD-ROM drive
USB flash drive or floppy drive to hold configuration file

Hard drive installation
CD-ROM for initial installation
1 GB hard drive

Embedded
512 MB Compact Flash card
Serial port for console

i have a few old old that might be perfect cause they have cpu's ranging from 1.3ghz-1.8ghz

I don't those old card with me cause they are boxed up and already at the new place, but as soon as i finish moving in i will check them,it is also good that i have a bunch of old IDE drives i can use with it lolol.

Good luck with the move, and i hope you can get pfsense working its amazing, you can do so much with it.
