It depends! What Brand GTX are you looking at getting?

A 550 Should be fine and capable of producing the power your looking for and will run the CPU and peripherals just fine. What you should be concerned about is the GPU power requirements.

Briefly looking I saw that the Gigabyte GV-N970G1 Requires the full 550, where the PNY VCGGTX9704XPB only requires 500. ASUS and MSI cards are both in the same power requirement ranges but are a little harder to find quickly.

Ok surmising i was getting the gigabyte version currently on Amazon.co.uk for £270 would the 550W be fine or will i need to get the 650 version, oh and if i do get the 650 version will everything run perfectly on this psu.

The GV-N970WF3OC-4GD requires a 550W PSU. You should be fine with the 550W but if it was me I would push up to the 650W to cover current and future demands. The computer is still only going to use what it needs and only pull full power from the PSU as needed, especially on an 80+ Gold PSU.

With a good margin. The official TDP of GTX 970 is just 145W, and the cards rarely go far above that unless superclocked out of the box.

Since it's rated 80 Plus Gold you can be sure that the supply delivers what it promises. Something that the graphics card manufacturers cannot safely assume that any brand/model rated at 550W can do. Partly therefor their highly inflated official requirements.

Thanks man, I kinda knew it would turn out that way but i wasn't so sure as to just buy without checking :)

What you mean is, the 550W will do fine

Do you know if the thermaltake toughpower 550W has a 6 and 8 pin connecotrs needed for the card
