Will MacPro 2013 memory work in a server

I have a bunch of 4GB Mac Pro dimms. They’re 1866 registered ECC and I’m wondering if I can plan on using them in a server build. I know there’s some sort of nonstandard thermal sensor that they use, but I haven’t been able to find anything on whether or not they’ll work on non-mac hardware.

Does anyone know?

I don’t know for sure, but most likely yes they will. Servers and Professional workstations use the same types of EEC RAM (registered). It’s the low end workstations and prosumer kit that uses non-registered.

I have swapped RAM in the past between Mac Pro and HP Z800 and also populated Z800 with cheap RAM that was pulled from Servers. The main think I noted back then was the speeds that the RAM ran at - the stuff from the servers was slower.

Yes

You’re talking about the older model Mac Pros, right? Those took normal ECC memory and did not have the unusual thermal sensor. I am asking specifically about memory from a 2013 Mac Pro (trash can).

Correct, this was the older stuff. I can’t see why having a temp sensor would stop RAM from working in a board that does not support it but you never know. Servers can be funny things and even using standard ram that is not on the official DELL or HP supported lists can lead to error messages sometimes.

A quick bit of googling yields no answers.

I’ll find out one way or another on Monday. Hope it works…

I’ve used them in the past with an HP DL120 G7. Never tested the dimms to make sure they are running with ECC enabled, but the system did boot up fine, never gave any errors, recognized, and used all of the available memory.

Compatability may differ per system, but I had no problems using them, and I’d imagine most systems would have no problems using the dimms.

Edit: I’m talking about the trash can model Mac Pro’s BTW, not the older LGA 1366 systems.

Thanks, that gives me hope. The server in question is Supermicro which, in my experience, tend to be pretty good about compatibility.

Good luck, and let us know of the results!

I have used standard ECC RAM “in” the MAC Pro. I must confess I’ve not taken the old ram out and used it elsewhere. That said, there is absolutley no reason that it wouldn’t work in reverse.
