Will 2 R9 280X crossfired handle 4K gaming with 4k upscaling from monitor? I.m going to use the 40' 4K A399U monitor with 4K upscaling and just considering a budget GPU solution instead of a high end one but just curious how the Crossfired R9 280X would handle this? Also to crossfire if the cards have the same specs is it ok to use 2 different manufacturers? What cards I get all depend on availability when I'm ready to buy because it seems all AMD's high end cards aren't in stock for long anywhere. But Really curious about the R9 280X crossfired and the 4K gaming abilities like I said originally.
Upscaling from what? 1080p? 1440p? Am I having a brainfart or something?
Or do you mean downscaling from 4k to 1440p/1080p?
In short: 2 R9 280Xs will handle 4k gaming, but setting may have to be reduced for a smoother experience.
Slightly expanded:
A single 280x can actually to 4k gaming at low settings already, with crossfire in it's current state, you get about 80% scaling from your second GPU, which is really, really good. You should easily get a fair experience at 4k. Although I'm still a believer that 1080p is sufficient for gaming, and 4k is only really useful for video editing etc, but that's perosnal opnion over fact.
I think @StaticNoize means he's getting a new monitor that's 4k?
possibly relevant (?)
No benchmark data though other than gameplay.
i'd say they will do the job at mid-high settings (non-ultra without AA and other filters).
still you'd be better off with single 290x in most cases.
CF/SLi scaling issues are common.
yup and yup. and you will love it AMD and A399U = darn good combibnation. I have 3 riggs running ATI on 2 A399U and 1 crossover 404K.
I have in the past done crossfire with different brands with success in the past; naminly 3870x2, 4870x2, 4890,5970 and 6990; I do not foresee problems as long as the specs are similar, and even then it will go at the fastest of the slowest card. Make sure PSU is adequate and stable. (ripple at lowest possible)
The monitor has an upscale feature from my understanding that helps trying to upscale it to 4k I've been told from actual owners that it is awesome. Like I said I was just considering the 280 x because it would only be $250 to add one to my 7970 and if I'm getting a 4k monitor I'd like to take advantage of it and as long as it will perform playable at 4k I'm ok. Still I may get 2 R9 Fury X depends on how available they are next month because you can't find one for more right now. I also haven't decide whether or not I want to just get by for now and give it some time until they perfect the HBM (high bandwidth memory). I may just try the 280x to see if I can truly tell that much of a difference in 4k gaming coming from 1080p. Every one swears I won't regret it but still may check it out before I dive in head first.
Well I'm getting a tier 1 gold rated 1200w psu that will power everything just fine and leaves me room for the future even tho it may be overkill it just means when I upgrade to Zen or better GPU's I won't have to replace the power supply.
What are these crossfire scaling issues which you speak of never crossfire before always just bought a single high end card but really want to explore it now.
I have a His 7970Ghz edition and the R9 280X is a identical card and my computer even reads the 7970 as a 200 series card. But I've already matched specs I can pare the His with the Gigabyte 280X with out any down locking at all.
Also I'd like to add I'm not one of those people that say the need like 100fps or they notice the difference. As long as I can hit 30 at minimum it will be just fine for me I mean it reaches a point where your brain can't register any more fps and it doesn't matter except to have room for the future.
good choice, if possible the PSU should have a multi rail +12V. (more than one rail) 1200w is great, I use 1000 to 1600 depending on the combination. Me neither, I go for a great display before crazy frame rates. I am often a game tourist, I just go around looking at great graphics. The A399U , depending how you look at it, has great up/down scaling, in other words, set it at 1080p and be amazed, set it to 4k and be bewildered, again not at the frame rates but the display quality is.........i have no words. :-) CLARIFICATION WHEN I SAY SET IT, I MEAN THE CARD S RESOLUTION.
what brand of PSU, thermaltake, corsair, antec............
the crossfire mention was CyclonDx
I have had no problems cross firing just about anything, and I am very happy with the performance.............and I am bloody fussy.
Oh wow. 1200w. I think you'd only need 1kw.... and even then.
Dual 280xs would be a beast setup. As to where to find one try eBay. Rear the description though. If it doesn't have anything or states the card was used for mining don't get it. You should be able to find one for $150-175.
Edit: just found a new xfx 280x for $180.

he has a good idea, in the respect that the 900 or so watts used will be very stable, and that is a major plus in a rigg.
There's two in stock and for regular price.
Me personally I'd save $100 and snatch up the Sapphire or ASUS STRIX Non X R9 Fury.
@Evil_MOBO The Fury non X has 500 less shader cores not interested if I'm going big going all the way.
Not a problem and not arguing your decision I linked you to two in stock right now at new egg.
i think you might run out of vram in certain games.
@Zippy_Parmesian I want to buy new really don't trust used GPU's plus for new with warranty it's only $75 more I mean that is worth it me. Also I have to get the Gigabyte one to properly match the specs of my HIS 7970. But thank you for your opinion I appreciate it I'm going with $1,200 so I can upgrade as much as I want without buying a new PSU and plus I'm upgrading to Zen and DDR4 next year when it's released so that means new CPU new mother board and new memory don't want to have to get a new PSU so get a bad ass one now.
@maxcat not sure how many rails it has but here is a link to it. It's a XFX Pro Edition not a fan of them but love their PSU it looks the best out of all of them. Plus it's made with all high quality Japanese components.
I tried to find it, or at least the spec for the rails, and the add i found is not clear on that, but it looks like a good PSU. just a tought, ddr4 will be a thing of the past quite sooner than expected. 2011 v1 is still (X79) one of the best platforms ever designed.
Plus to every one, Like I said don't know if that's what I'm going to get might just try it out to decide if I want to get 2 Fury X and go beast mode or 2 390X, or if I'm going to just play around with the R9 280 X just to learn about crossfire and to experience basic 4K. But like I said I'm not going to be ready to buy till around the tenth of next month. I just Don't know yet Ive made atleast 5 different parts list and don't know what I'm going with yet. Because Ive decided to get some parts to just get buy till all the parts I actually want come out, some are budget some are not.
Here I will list them all if you feel like checking them out at all I would appreciate some feedback. My current build is listed on my profile (actually I'll link it it's the first one) and these are the parts I'm using to upgrade it. NOT A FRESH BUILD.
CURRENT BUILD.

There is more they are just too similar but tell me what you think, and F.Y.I. I'm getting 2 mice because one is for my laptop and one for desktop, plus one for regular use and one for gaming because of Macro's.
390X is realy not worth it.
The 390X is slightly faster then the 390.,
But the performance diffrence between the 2 is not big enough to justify the extra costs for the 390X over the 390.
atleast not in my opinnion.
