Wifi Bridge through neighborhood

New to the forums, but a longtime Wendell fan.

Here my issue. my roomate moved out and bought a house up the road from myself. We are trying to eliminate him having to buy internet at home (shady i know).

I have 2 Engenius ENH500 which are directional 28db antennae.

there are lots of trees and houses between us, but walking distance from my house to his is only .4 miles.

think i can do it? there is a elevation difference between my house and his - his is higher than mine.

I doubt it's impossible but it'll probably be super flakey in terms of bandwidth and latency. It would be a fairly cool project however.

The thing you'll likely have to worry about even if it does work is someone in a house between you turning on a microwave, large appliance, etc

How much does a basic internet package cost in your area?

Big poll and microwave links. Will cost more then internet but would work :)

Not gonna add anything useful besides the fact that you may want to blur out the street names. Because if you get caught they can use those above images as damning evidence. If you blur the names you can make the case that that is not your neighborhood.

Is this illegal?!

Nope a guy helping out a mate is not illegal at all.

no way wifi will reach that far.
Maybe try a laser?

My first thought would be a set of the UBNT radios mounted to the outside of the houses or on to tress or something. Not sure if they will work through all of the trees and whatnot though.

I was not sure to be honest. But you said shady in your original post, so I assumed it was. Sorry for the scare.

Depending on how powerful the antennae are, .4mi should be no problem.

There are limits on how loud (powerful) you can have the antenna, but there's nothing stopping you from having a directional 300km antenna to shoot at the horizon to your cousin Bob's if you live in a really big flat area. 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands are unlicensed, at least in the US. It's your right as a citizen to use those bands as you see fit.

Who knows how he'll react to little talking foxes.

I'd say use directional. Otherwise the signal goes equally in the opposite direction. And shut off ssid broadcast.

Edit wtf is with the #

You're probably going to need line of sight, so if you can't see each other's houses from your roofs you may need a mast of some kind.
