Why still "Next" Gen?

Why are people still referring to PS4 and Xbone as "Next" gen. They have been out for a while so are the current generation of gaming consoles.

Will we have to wait for their replacements to be announced before media types, and gamers, stop calling them "next" gen?

Am i justing being nit picky about grammar?

"Next Gen" is just marketing BS and because every youtuber or website still calls them like this, so the people do the same. I think in some peoples mind the PS3/XBOX360 are still the current gen, so they won't get confused :D

I think its interesting that the consoles had to become so expensive just to keep up with the newest games, another sign that this could be the "Last Gen".

its all marketing. Trying to make last gen look like shite while making current gen look shiny and new by plastering next gen all over everything as is projectile vomiting.

PS3 and 360 were called "Next Gen" for the first couple years they were out too.  It's normal.  It's just a term used to differentiate them from the previous generation.  Part of it is marketing as has been said, and part of it is just the fact that most console gamers are still using the previous generation.  So they refer to it as "Next Gen" until they get to the point where most people have upgraded.  Usually takes 2 or 3 holiday seasons before that's the case.

well for us PC gamers the "NEXT GEN" that the PS4 and Xbone are being marketed as is "Past Gen" for us. and in reality it is embarrassing considering we've have had 1080p for years and the current consoles can't even play it at a reasonable frame-rate or not at all. they are referred as the "Next Gen" cause its "the Next generation of consoles" and truthfully they shouldn't be next gen, cause its just bumped up specs of the old consoles, nothing mind boggling. the good majority of games on consoles are running at 720p and some games are running resolutions that are in between 720p and 1080p

i think what will put the consoles to rest is when 4K becomes the Standard to Replace 1080p. I HIGHLY DOUBT AMD will even Have an APU that can play 4K games at an acceptable frame-rate any time soon considering that there are Modern APUs today that i would say "Struggle a bit" in 1080p gaming as it is. and I think when that happens console gamers are probably going to open their eyes and probably consider PC Gaming as their primary platform when The Successor to the PS4 and Xbone are finally running 1080p games and 4K will be the standard.

I agree completely. PC gaming has been gaining ground the past couple years. For a couple reasons, those of us who were kids back when console was king, and before PC gaming was as accessible as it is now are now adults with jobs. Most adults who game do so on PC. Consoles are no longer surpassing PC like they were 10 years ago. They are not the value option now that gaming PCs are more accessible both money wise and build wise (it really is not that hard to build a computer). Things like steamOS and in-home streaming make couch-gaming a thing for PC gamers. Leave your fire-breathing gaming rig in the other room while chilling out on the couch with your buddies playing Trine 2 through a cheap laptop plugged into your TV running steam-in home streaming.

Even my parents, who aren't gamers, look at my computer, and the games I play and are impressed with the graphics, and when I tell them about the 'next gen' consoles they are confused at why they suck so much. In the next 4 years I see 4k becoming the standard, with 1080p becoming something like what 480p (standard definition) is considered now. And I bet at that point consoles will still at best be maybe running 1080p, on 4K televisions and look like shit.

Alot is going to change in the coming years as my generation graduates college and gets into the world. I see alot of forward thinking people around me. Something is going to happen.

Dear god what did this post turn into?

i'm not convinced the 4k thing will really hurt the consoles so much. when gaming on console you sit at least 2-3 meters farther away from the TV/Monitor then you do when sitting at a PC. That effectively makes it difficult for your eyes to resolve detail beyond 1080p on a 50 inch TV for example.... if you have a 70+ screen or projector then 4k starts to matter at that distance.

obviously, if you're sitting at your desk a meter away from the monitor/screen then resolutions above 1080p are noticeable even in the 32 inch size.

but yeah, back to the original topic. i guess we'll just have to wait a bit (a year?) for the gaming media to move on from calling PS4/Xbone "next gen" consoles. i remember when the original playstation and the 3dO were considered next gen.

You know how people call potatoes new (and last autumn harvest 'old') after harvest for a while? It's the same thing with potatoes consoles.

They'er still making games for the last gen, far cray 4 even, so the new gen hasn't taken over. Not sure if it ever will. Heck the gpu the xb1 has is about the same as the 285 gtx from 2009! Yeah its 4 years "newer" high end than the 360 was when it came out which is about the same as generations past but its also been 5 years since then. And when that card was being pushed to its max games were still being made for the 360, so its likely that the 360 and ps3 will continue to receive full games until the xb1 and ps4 are having games push them to their limits just to get sub 720p and 30fps. Which should be a few years off.

To add to that, what I see as a college student, so many people in college that game are turning to laptops. Mostly amd apus because intel's igps aren't as good right now and amd cpus are good enough. I personally use a desktop and my old laptop+linux for light gaming. I talked to a couple of them and this is basically what they had to say

Can it play the games I want, regardless of settings? : consoles [x] laptop[x]

cheaper games due to sales console[] pc [x]

can it do more than just game console pc[x]

can I use it in school and to actually help better my life console[] pc[x]

Thats not to say theres no place for console, but for adults and students pc is the way to go at this point in time.

idk about all that.... i mean, they actually cost Less money.

the PS3 debuted at $500 and $600.
the PS4 launched at $399.

360 launched at $400 and $500.
xbox one launched at $500 (now $400 after they decided to drop the failed Kinect)

Wii launched at $250
Wii U launched at $299 and $349 (i assume the tablet had something to do for the higher price.) now $249 and $299

so really, in the case of sony, it got cheaper, a lot cheaper. and the others stayed about the same, and then dropped less than a year later.

Lol they are really Previous Generation, computer games have looked like that for quiet a while now, and not just at 720P@30FPS, at best they have a 270/7870/750ti level of graphics. I can imagine that the next generation of graphics cards will give atleast similar performance as an entry level card, and APUs are maybe 2 generations off in all seriousness, and In 3 years most laptops with mid-high end APUs (amd) might give a similar visual experience.

Hell there is a company making CPUS with ray tracers integrated into the IGP, for mobile parts, I could see them achieving console level performance in a few years time.

They have 265/7850 for the ps4 260x/7790 fort the xb1
