Why so few IOMMU groups on ASRock X470 Taichi?

I’m building up a new server on an ASRock X470 Taichi with a Ryzen 5 3600. When I check IOMMU it shows only 8 groups with both GPUs together in the same group. This doesn’t match several examples I’ve seen on this forum for the very same mobo (e.g. 20+ groups with GPUs in different ones).

I’ve read elsewhere that the BIOS and kernel can impact this, but after upgrading to the latest BIOS and moving to 5.3 I still see the same grouping.

Any ideas on why this may be? Is it the CPU limiting the groups?

It looks like the IOMMU groups your seeing online are using a kernel with the ACS override patch applied which will make more groups available to you at the risk of possible hardware stability. My x370 Taichi has a similar group layout as your board before I apply the patch.

How you go about patching your kernel depends on what distribution your using with some people already maintaining patched kernels you can install with your package manager or if you are feeling adventurous you could patch and compile the kernel yourself.

Often times the “latest” BIOS usually make a step or two backwards in terms of advanced features like IOMMU groups. Load up the earliest bios you can find that has support for your Zen 2 CPU and go from there.

ACS patch can help, but it’s not without its pit-falls.

Unfortunately with this mobo I had to upgrade the BIOS to support my processor and it’s a one-way street (can’t downgrade) according to ASRock.

I don’t have the ACS option enabled in the BIOS, so I’ll try that (when I’m back in front of my box in a coulpe days).

Otherwise, I’m starting to think I need support directly from ASRock based on a thread I saw on reddit (titled “Tech support sent you a beta BIOS? Post it here!”). There seems to be a lot of ongoing patching w.r.t. X470 and ASRock BIOS. Having a new processor probably isn’t helping me.

ACS is the option that does the splitting up of the groups. That will resolve your issue. I use Beta 3.77 but the groups have not changed at all for the past 5 versions I’ve gone through.

“It stands for Access Control Services and disabling/enabling it toggles the ability to disable peer-to-peer transactions between PCIe devices, allowing IOMMU group separation.”

In case you forget where to navigate to see the option it does show the location in the top of the screenshots I took.

However, I was surprised how different my BIOS menu options were relative to yours. With the defaults, I didn’t even have the ACS option:

Did the beta BIOS upgrades expose all these extra options? Or I wonder if options are being gated for me based on the CPU type.

I also still have fewer groups (16) than I’ve seen in other posts for the same board (including here!). But the key thing for me is that the GPUs are now separated, as well as the NVMe, so I’ll live with that.

But any idea why the grouping on my machine is so different? I’m leaning towards the CPU micro-architecture being the culprit (Zen 2 in my case). Maybe a lower-end Ryzen 5 has poorer grouping than say a 7 or 9.

huh, that’s weird. When I enable ACS on mine, it auto disables ACS cap. Can you disable ACS cap after enabling ACS? Might allow for further expansion. It’s weird because I am fairly sure my menu has been pretty much the same for the past 3-4 updates. Maybe it’s having OC mode on in the first OC tweak menu? Very weird. Anyway, I think you definitely want the beta bios if you have Ryzen 3000, unless by zen 2 you meant zen+. For reference I have the 2700x.

EDIT: Actually I do remember the menu looking like that. Although it was a few versions ago. Which version do you have?

I’m on BIOS 3.60 for now (I know I need to update). CPU is 3600 (Zen 2 / Matisse).

Was waiting for a non-beta, and it looks like it’s finally out!

There’s now an official 3.90 on the ASRock site. Hopefully somebody can confirm that it actually works for GPU pass-through, then I’ll upgrade to that.

Make a backup of what you have now and go for it! Unless it’s one of those darned one-way upgrades.

I don’t think you have to worry about future BIOS updates bricking passthrough. Not on AM4, at least.
