Why is DVI still a thing?

because projectors are expensive…

That plus it’s easier and cheaper for monitor manufacturers to use dvi and force users to use a passive adapter.

The locking design of displayport is a pain in the ass on some cases as you can’t get your hand between the case and the locking mechanism or when you use more than one, cable. Shit on dvi all you like, screw in plugs are better than dp’s tension lock design

Different strokes for different folks?

If something works, use it. If it doesn’t work, don’t use it.

Fuck DVI…
Why is VGA still a thing?

This is my B350 motherboard’s rear IO…

Beautiful motherboard right there,DVI,HDMI,VGA,USB-C, even freaking serial…

All with full linux support

VGA is still a thing because it was the last port using an analog signal. Same reason you have a PS/2 port, people want the “faster” response that analog provides. That, and as mentioned previously, server environments use VGA almost entirely. It’s rare to see any graphics port other than VGA.

The lines between consumer and enterprise have been getting blurred recently, and this is the result. Consumers will have to deal with the fact that they have enterprise ports and firmware when buying enterprise-grade parts. shrug

Coming soon: Someone asking why they have RAID support built into their UEFI…

Why?
For end user desktops (especially laptops) - sure. There are plenty of better options.

But for workstations that may be using specialist monitors (or other displays) worth 4 figures or more, or servers that need to plug into a KVM, VGA and DVI are still perhaps appropriate.

Don’t forget DisplayPort is also free and it supports hubs where you can have three monitor outputs for one Display Port. I think the real question should be “Why is HDMI still a thing”. (even though it’s obvious because it’s ubiquitous, but still inferior technology that costs extra)

I don’t know why but industry seems to think the smaller the connector the better.

At least now there is a warrant to use display port cables since 4K is a thing now.

I’ve gone through so many micro USB cables I order them in packs of 10.
In my experience Mini USB is a lot more durable than micro USB. It’s a shame more devices that have the room don’t use a better connector.

Slightly off topic but for anyone who is fed up with micro USB ports becoming flakey there are magnetic micro USB cables. I use one to charge my wireless headset to prevent the connector wearing out or the solder joints cracking.

You can find them on Ebay, Aliexpress and Amazon quite easily. Personally I’ve found Aliexpress to be the cheapest

The better question is why is HDMI still a thing. All we need is max bandwidth all the data.

Because PC connector adoption is slow.

Wow, I like the look of those!

At least Apple helps moving things forward. Thanks Apple!

There are plenty of cases where inferior technology has won over superior technology due to either the fact that the former was already in production (thus, widespread) or cheaper to produce; VHS (over LaserDisc and BetaMax), USB (over FireWire). It’s just how things seem to go, unfortunately.

EDIT: LaserDisc was a home video format, not audio.

I have one of these for my phone. It came with a three pack of µUSB, USB-C, and Lightning tips. I threw away the lightning.

If you cheap out on anything than it will fall apart. Does not mean its a bad standard. Just a bad implementation

Because its a superior analog input to VGA and not all systems are super new. I already have issues with things not having VGA because we have so much stuff that still requires it. The day they stop shipping with VGA is the day I start buying adapters.

Things like monitors stay around for like 10 years usually.

True I still have a 2nd display that is a dell 24" LCD. all the usual ports on it and working well.

I don’t think VHS killed Betamax, S-VHS and Hi8 killed Betamax. (though they didn’t exist in pre-recorded media)

How long have you been using it? It would be good to workout lifespan for those cables
