Why has my CPU voltage increased over time?

Specs:
i7-8700 (non-k) cooled with Hyper 212 evo
MSI B360i Gaming itx
16GB Corsair 2400mhz
GTX 1080
Corsair RMx 550w (gold)
Bios is up to date and all settings are default.

CPU temps never went over 65c but now is approaching 80c

when i first built this PC i distinctly remember my CPU would never hit more than 1.298v during sustained all-core boost of 4.3ghz all on its own.
However over the last few months i noticed that now its creeping up to 1.348v
and now over the last few days its regularly going up to 1.398v to 1.404v now…

Windows is up to date, Bios settings are all set to default, i haven’t changed anything in there…any ideas?

Edit 1: i have cleaned and reapplied and reseated my CPU and CPU cooler
Edit 2:

Edit 3: i bought this CPU brand new in Aug 2018

That seems like a lot of voltage. Are you using the auto setting?

My suggestion would be to drop down the voltage and set it as a static amount.

When you say the cpu is reaching 80c what is the CPU doing? To get an idea you need to test load temps with a software like prime 95 or intel burn test. You can keep dropping the voltage in small increments until you find your lowest stable voltage.

If multi core enhancement in the BIOS is on you can turn that off too.

I cant change the voltage or change any MCE settings…its a B360 motherboard

I would need a Z370 or Z390 mobo to do that

Probably related to the new bios update,
and or maybe intel firmware updates.

And of course cpu´s kinda degrade over time.
However that does not seem to be the issue here.

So my guess it’s either the bios or a intel firmware update.
How much Vcore does it run when its idling?
Of course the voltage read outs from software like HW monitor,
etc arent really that accurate.
Especially not on the cheaper motherboards.
Because of the way those figures are gathered.

idle voltage is around 0.736 ish. as per the screenshot that shows the minimum values which were on idle.

That seems fairly normal.

That 1.404v high water mark is a ton of voltage

That’s chip damaging zone.

I have no idea what could be causing this. You shouldn’t be hitting over 1.25v on stock frequencies, iirc.

yeah im not comfortable with this 1.4v either.
For now im turning off intel turboboost in the bios so the CPU runs at the base frequency of 3.2 Ghz
which only runs the CPU at 1.048v under load
