I am currently in high school and I recently had a conversation with one of the "tech" guys that work at are school about the NSA and the internet in general and he was just like I don't see why it's a bad thing and why do I care and everything. I just don't understand why people do not get the seriousness of the subject why do people think it is okay for ISP's and our government to do these things. Someone explain this to me
I doubt he is going to share any opinions while on the clock. Its just how most people act while on the job.
It could be he really beieves in the administration that is in power and a lot of people dont realize how important our civil liberies and freedoms that our forefathers fought for is. A lot of people dont get it! Its good that you do. Dont be discouraged ,keep talking to people and asking and explaineing things to them like why its a bad idea that the govt collects all our data and stores it on giant servers in Salt lake city . And then we get to pay them trillions to do it. Its not right and its not what the USA was founded to become.
I don't really care about what governments do. Its just the fact that we don't know what they do and that they don't tell us.
Apathy. Ignorance. Lack of understanding of the full impact and implications beyond the immediately obvious. I've heard my own mother say that she didn't see what the big deal was. She said she didn't care if her phone got tapped because "I don't talk about anything important anyway." She didn't grasp the concept that once they start chipping away at civil liberties, they don't stop. Some people simply wont care until they see a tangible, personal effect on their lives.
It's the Niemöller effect. "First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out; Because I was not a Socialist" and all that... not to put too heavy a hand on it.
It's a good poem
Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.
I work alongside the IT guy at my school during the school day for a credit and during the summer for a paid-internship.
[Atleast in my school district]
Trust me- not all IT people are like this. Most admins will hold their tongue on the clock and even after for various reasons. Admins (especially in schooling) need to and do know that there has to be a certain level of security and order. That's how systems those systems work.
for instance anything you store/do/download on your user on a school computer can be seen/stored/and used against you should something go bad. (security breach or general record of the goings on) and if a student is doing something inappropriate on the computers it should be stopped and prevented (eg watching porn at school) basically you give up some right to go to public school
Some people get it in their heads that this can be applied to the rest of the country and should be. This is wrong for various reasons discussed time and time again in the TEK
The NSA spying and net neutrality are difficult issues to get those affected by them to mobilize against. Any interest group favoring the citizens would only be offering collective benefits such as privacy and a free/equal market place. It is very difficult to organize people when the benefits they receive are not immediately apparent or financial. Also the number of people affected by these types of laws is quite large, and divided between political ideals which makes mobilizing them much more difficult as well.
As a contrast the ISPs and NSA receive either financial or selective benefits that are much more apparent to the interest groups in support of them and as a result have an easier time getting people who agree with them to mobilize.
Congress is going to respond to those who organize because congress is of course political and the individual members in congress have a responsibility to their political parties to get reelected.
It sucks but this is kind of how it goes in the US at least.
There is a reason for that. Your a smart person ,or you wouldnt be here. Now ask yourself why would the president lie and say we arent doing that! Repeatedly? For weeks ! Hmmm
You my good man , Get "it" !
Read Sal Aliskis book and you will see what is being implemented
Thanks for all the good answers guys! I appreciate it!
To be honest, I dont care wether or not the NSA is having a look at my internet packets, as I do not have anything to hide.
However!
I do not like the fact, that any goverment are using that amount of ressources, when it have been proven to be an non-succesful way.
I do not like how the goverment is trying to hide it the way they do.
