Why didnt my clock work?

I watch bigclivedotcom and once day he had a clock kit on there he put together so I decided I want one so I ordered a cheap one nothing like his linked below. Problem is once I finished assembly I attempted to power it with a usb power bank. it worked for about a minute, the ic got hot enough to deform the socket slightly then it died.

I believe my assembly was correct and there do not appear to be any bridges, any eletronical people care to guess what whent wrong here?

I was gonna use it too tell time but now I can't this makes me sad.

Buddy, it's a dollar fifty with free shipping... Order 20 of those. I can guarantee half will not work as intended.
I used to be an enthusiast like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee... Wait, that's different...
I used to deal with some of those hobby kits back in the day when I was dealing with actual electronic devices. They are just bad quality. Assembling the parts yourself from any electronics store will end up 20 times more expensive but it will work. Because the parts will actually be quality parts.

Got to order another one. Bad luck caused by bad quality.
You could build one by yourself from the ground up.

pretty sure I fucked up somehow and the parts where ok and I don't have the binary for the mcu so I def can't build an exact copy.

I did test every component sept the fired ic they are fine. maybe the power bank was too much for it?

Put a cooler on the IC.

The reason it died was because the IC got too hot.

I'm just looking at the general picture. I didn't look into the exact details of the build yet.

Who said anything about exact copy?

Basically use frequency generator and frequency splitters etc with other multi segment displays...
If you have the design skills you could easily build your own...

Could also take the lazy route with a cheap microcontroller and crystall.

Just be like clock boy and take a clock apart and say you built it. Then get a free pass to the white house and Google :^)

I believe he already took the lazy rout with cheap everything...

not really, I can order an already put together usb clock for less

I know if big clive put this kit together it woulda worked

it might have been impedance from the shitty ic socket that killed it though

Clocks like these are used for uuh certain goals. Usually they blow up quite quick. Its part of the deal.. im calling the NSA now (JOKE).

U had fun with it right?

I bought 2 kits like the ones he bought, they werent so cheap but they both work great. The one you linked is not that kit.

This is the kit bigclivedotcom put together. http://www.ebay.com/itm/182400181016

yeah said as much in my op. I didn't really care for that one due too the endless flashing between time and other things also this one was cheaper

Got a few similar to this arround. Might try some clock-ish thing with my Arduino on them.

Or buy on of these:

OH WOW I LIKE THAT SECOND ONE!

Good tips THANKS!

And the second one also has QQ chat features it seems.. (chinese icq fork/clone)
