Why building console killers is Retarded

I didnt build my pc to compete with consoles. I build my pc to excede console abilities. If my pc just barely beat a console i would kill myself.  It freaking easy to excede console abilities so save a little money and stay ahead of the curve not just settling for whatever crap the console companies are putting out. They are behind the tech and there is no reason to even bother buying one. Just a personal opinion :)  The agruement is stupid. Comparision ( Walking ten miles to talk to a person or just picking up the phone. )

PCs are used for a lot more than just gaming. Being able to play modern games, while still kicking ass in other profitable areas of computing, isn't retarded.

Quess i was not very clear on my point, LOL Thanks brennan . The point is not to just beat a console, Its to excede it. To excede it by a large margin not just alittle.

i built my pc to be a workstation, not having to buy a console is just a great side effect, i couldn't care how the graphics compare

In my view, "console killing" PCs compete on price, not performance. They merely show that affordable PC gaming is something that can be achieved.

If an affordable PC beats a console, that's fortunate, but not necessary for everyone. We don't really know what consoles are capable of. Recent news would indicate that the new consoles are extremely overhyped. I find it amusing.

Yes i am hearing some very negative stuff on the new consoles. And for almost 500 dollars its time to skip console and join the big dogs. lol

The goal of a console killer is to build a pc for same price of a console and have it perform better.

To add to my comment, it helps break up the notion that gaming PCs cost $$$$s. People would be prepared to move from console, whether the PC beat console or not.

I don't think this generation of console offers anything new. All the same COD games, with slightly better graphics. PCs have the computational power and appropriate devices for much better games. PC does have a much better library. I'm not going to cry for Killzone, that PS4 exclusive, it's just another FPS.

So, performance is almost negligible. It's having a greater level of fun that counts, and the better games on PC really fulfills that.

Ehh, yeah, I am sticking with PC and my Wii U is there for a lot of indies and exclusive shit not on PC, and I'll just leach off my cousin's PS4 when KH3 comes out.

Good point. I get so sick and tired of hearing about consoles that are subpar. That it drives me.

Comparing consoles to similarly-priced PCs is retarded. That's the reason why I don't like all those konsole-killer $400 builds everywhere. PC is not a thing that you just play games on. The only part of PC that is just playing games is GPU.

Not to mention you can play way more genres of games on PC as opposed to consoles having just a couple of exclusive games.

You know, you could make a console killing PC if there was such an OS that would be built for gaming and gaming only and be optimized and not have so many other things going on in the background and stuff, but sadly that doesn't exist yet :(

Consoles are more efficient not because of OS but because PCs run games on higher level of abstraction which is a necessary because each PC has unique hardware.

Well, this console lifecycle is going to last ten years. In that ten year gap, we might have new consoles emerge, we might see the end of consoles. Console killers will become more and more relevant in the next couple of years.

I really do hope that people see sense and make the switch. It would really help the PC market, because gamers are keeping the PC afloat right now.

Another good reason to design console killers at this time; to show that we are not beaten! We can't let console fanboys simply steal the low end price point. If you hate console, you need to offer alternatives.

Actually there are people who go through Windows and create installs that filter out a lot of the garbage that gets automatically installed and runs in the background that you dont need when you install Windows. I've seen some pretty well laid out Gaming oriented Installs of Windows XP and Windows 7 that use a fraction of the memory than normally would be used running background programs and services.

It doesn't really matter. Gaming builds usually have at least 8Gb of RAM so even if they manage to reduce memory usage by a few hundred megabytes (which is a very generous assumption), it won't affect anything. Background services don't affect GPU usage which is bottleneck in 90% of cases and don't affect CPU cycles to any noticeable degree.

People have already pointed this out, but I am going to say it again anyway; the point of a "Kill Your Console" build is to show console gamers they do not need to invest tons of money into a gaming rig. Many console gamers are still chanting about how "expensive" PC's cost over consoles, and "Kill Your Console" articles or videos are created to prove otherwise.

I must admit that "Kill Your Console" articles/videos seem to still be focusing on the current generation of consoles, but not the next generation of consoles that have 4x's more power will be released in a couple of months. I do look forward to the "Kill Your Console" video Tek Syndicate will be releasing soon, but Logan needs to think about the next generation of consoles also or else the entire video will be pointless after a year or two (the reason why it will take a year or two to be pointless is because developers will continue to release games on the Xbox 360/PS3 platform).

I agree and disagree. We don't know what next-gen is capable of. We heard it will support 1080p gaming, now articles indicate that it is not true 1080p. We don't want to be a misinformed community. We need to see real-world performance. Then we can create a kill console for next-gen.

We have people who wants a simple set up without any frills (consoles) and people who are keen to get into gaming and other technical stuff (PC). As said many times, games for consoles are optimised to run at a specified hardware, while PC games do not have any kind of limitations, it's a full-on graphical rendering to the best the game can pull out.

I'm pretty sure most people on here aren't the target audience for "kill your console" videos. The idea is to show console gamers that there is another option especially when the next gen comes out.

It also feels like the industry is dipping it's tow into the console killer market with the more feature packed m-itx boards coming out so people can build smaller living room gaming pcs. I know when I try and nudge my console gaming friends towards PC their first response is PCs cost too much then after that it's that they want to sit on the sofa with a pad and game rather than at a desk with a keyboard and mouse so maybe with smaller form factor budget gaming capable builds we'll see a rise in the PC market.
